Stay outside the center only if you want easier car access, a quieter base, or a more standard full-service hotel.

Edge of the old town or modern Bukhara
Best for travelers who want easier transfers, quieter surroundings, parking, or a larger hotel with more amenities and do not mind being slightly removed from the historic core.
My recommendation: stay inside the old town if this is your first time in Bukhara or you only have a couple of days. Choose the edge of the center or modern Bukhara only if comfort, parking, or easier road access matters more to you than being able to walk everywhere.

Lyabi-Hauz Area: Best for First-Time Visitors
If I were picking one area for most travelers, I would start with Lyabi-Hauz.
This is one of the best areas to stay in Bukhara because it is central without feeling too formal. You are close to major sights, but also in an area with restaurants, cafés, courtyards, and enough movement to make it a good place to stay rather than just pass through. It is easy to walk to Chor Minor, the trading domes, Magoki Attor, and Poi-Kalyan from here.
For a short stay, that can make a difference. You can get out early, sightsee on foot, take a break in the afternoon, and go back out again in the evening without wasting time. If you only have two or three days, this is exactly the kind of base that makes the trip smoother.
This area also works well if you want Bukhara to feel varied rather than monumental all the time. Poi-Kalyan is impressive, but Lyabi-Hauz is where the city feels easier to settle into. The downside is that it is a popular area, so some hotels and guesthouses can feel a bit more touristic.
Poi-Kalyan and the Central Old Town: Best for Landmarks
If your priority is being closest to Bukhara’s main monuments, stay near Poi-Kalyan.
This puts you near the Kalan Minaret, Kalan Mosque, Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, the trading domes, and within walking distance of the Ark. If you want to be in the middle of Bukhara’s most important historic sights, this is the strongest location.
It is especially good for travelers who like going out early or returning after dark. Being nearby makes it easy to see Poi-Kalyan more than once, which is worth doing. The square feels different at different times of day, and staying close means you do not have to plan around transport.
This area also makes sense if your trip is focused almost entirely on architecture and historic sites. You can cover a lot on foot and keep your route efficient. The trade-off is that it can feel a little more monument-focused and a little less relaxed than the Lyabi-Hauz area. However, there are also some streets that are quieter at night.
Between Lyabi-Hauz and the Trading Domes: Best Overall Balance
If you want the best all-round location, look at the lanes between Lyabi-Hauz, the trading domes, and the route toward Poi-Kalyan. This is the most practical base in Bukhara. You are not tied too closely to one major square, but you are still within easy walking distance of almost everything that matters. It is central, flexible, and well suited to travelers who want to move around the old town without overthinking route planning.
This area works especially well because Bukhara is not a city you visit in one straight line. You will probably go out, change direction, stop for tea, return to your hotel, and head out again. Staying here makes that easy.
If you are choosing without wanting to overcomplicate it, this is probably the safest option. It gives you access to the city’s main sights without locking you into the busiest or most obvious corner of the old town.
Edge of the Old Town: Best for Easier Access and Quieter Stays
If you do not want to stay deep inside the historic core, the edge of the old town is the best compromise. This works well for travelers arriving by car, using private drivers, planning day trips, or simply wanting a slightly quieter hotel. You still have good access to the old town, often by foot or with a very short taxi ride, but pickups and drop-offs are usually easier than they are in the narrow streets inside the center.
This can also make sense if you are staying a bit longer and want a base that feels less busy in the evenings. The downside is that you lose some convenience, but not that much because Bukhara is walkable overall.
Modern Bukhara: Best for Comfort Over Location
Modern Bukhara makes sense only for a narrower group of travelers.
If you want a more standard hotel setup, easier parking, wider roads, or larger properties, this may suit you better. It can also work for road-trippers or travelers who care much more about room comfort than being able to walk into the historic center.
That said, I would not recommend it for most first-time visitors, unless you don’t mind some walking. Bukhara is small enough that staying outside the old town is rarely necessary, and the city works best when your hotel is part of your sightseeing rhythm rather than something separate from it.

How to Choose Where to Stay in Bukhara
