Best Africa eSIM in 2026: Regional Plans for Safaris, Cities, and Multi-Country Trips

The Africa plans I compare for trips across several countries, from safari routes to North Africa and the Indian Ocean islands.

I have come to realize that the best Africa eSIM depends on your route, not the country count on a sales page. I’ve had dependable data in cities and airports, then lost reception on safari drives and long rural transfers. A regional plan only makes sense if it covers every country on your itinerary and connects to suitable local networks.

From Tunisia and Egypt to Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Réunion and Mauritius, I’ve used Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Maya Mobile while traveling. Here I compare their coverage, value, activation and hotspot rules, and explain when a country-specific eSIM or local SIM makes more sense. The gaps are often more important than the headline price.

Best Africa eSIM: Quick Verdict

Choose according to the countries on your itinerary. For most multi-country trips, I start with Saily; Airalo is the first budget comparison, Nomad works well on selected routes inside its smaller footprint, and Maya is the more interesting alternative when you want one global setup or heavier data use.

Best budget comparison

Airalo Hello Africa

Useful when your data needs are modest and every stop is inside its 36-country regional plan. Morocco and Tunisia are the two obvious route traps.

  • Coverage: 36 countries
  • Current example: 1 GB / 7 days for US$11
  • Top-ups: available

Nomad Africa

A good fit when its 11-country plan covers your complete itinerary. The narrower country list matters more than the headline price.

  • Best for: focused East, North or Southern Africa combinations
  • Coverage: 11 countries when checked
  • Hotspot: supported on the plans I checked

Maya Mobile

Worth comparing when Africa is one leg of a longer trip or you want a reusable global eSIM with unlimited-style plans and hotspot support.

  • Best for: Africa plus another continent
  • Current example: unlimited 14 days for US$27.99
  • Hotspot: supported
Check Maya coverage and plans
Morocco or Tunisia? Do not assume the largest Africa country count includes both. Airalo Hello Africa currently includes neither.
Namibia or Zimbabwe? None of the three regional plans in my comparison covered them when checked.
Réunion or Comoros? These are easy to miss in an “Africa” plan. Plan a separate country, global or local option.

Safari rule: an eSIM can solve the border-crossing problem, but it cannot create signal deep inside a national park. For Kenya and Tanzania, use the route-specific advice in my Kenya and Tanzania safari eSIM comparison and keep offline maps available.

In the Serengeti, reliable mobile data can vanish beyond the main camps and roads. The local network matters more than the eSIM brand’s country count.

How We Tested Africa eSIMs

I personally tested Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Maya Mobile during my travels in Africa. Other members of the Unusual Nomad team tested several of the additional providers mentioned in this guide.

During our tests, we considered:
  • Installation, activation and initial connection
  • Everyday use for maps, messaging and travel bookings
  • Connection in cities, smaller towns and during transfers
  • Reconnection after weak-signal areas
  • Hotspot availability and practical data use
  • Overall value compared with the plan’s coverage and limitations

I also rechecked each provider’s current country coverage, prices, activation rules and hotspot policy on 20 September 2026, because eSIM plans and roaming partners change regularly.

Check Saily’s Current Africa Plans and Country List

Checked on 20 September 2026. “Not included” means the destination is not included in that provider’s regional Africa plan; the provider may still sell a separate country, MENA or global plan. Coverage lists and roaming partners can change, so check every destination again before purchase.

Best Regional Africa eSIMs Explained

Saily Africa: Best Africa eSIM in My Testing

Best for: multi-country Africa trips, travelers who value simplicity, and anyone who wants one regional plan that is easy to manage throughout the journey.

Saily is the regional Africa eSIM I rate highest overall. I have used it myself in Africa and found it straightforward, reliable and easy to manage, which is exactly what I want from an eSIM once a trip is underway.

The app is clear, installation is simple, and the regional plan means you can keep the same eSIM active while moving between several covered African countries instead of buying a new plan every time you cross a border.

That makes Saily particularly useful for longer itineraries covering multiple parts of the continent. It is not necessarily the cheapest option in every single country, but it offers a strong balance of coverage, ease of use and data choices without making the setup unnecessarily complicated. For most travelers, that balance matters more than saving a few euros on one isolated country plan.

Airalo: Best Budget Option for Lighter Data Use

Verdict: A strong regional option for travelers who want lower-cost data packages and broad coverage without paying for more data than they need.

Airalo is the regional eSIM I rate highest for lighter data use and tighter budgets. I have used it myself in Africa and found it reliable for everyday travel needs such as WhatsApp, maps, bookings, browsing and occasional social media.

Its regional Africa plan covered 36 countries when I checked in September 2026, which was the widest country coverage among the regional plans I compared. The smaller package sizes are useful if you only need a few gigabytes rather than a large or unlimited plan.

The main thing to watch is the actual country list. Airalo’s Hello Africa plan does not currently include Morocco or Tunisia, so the high country count does not automatically make it the best fit for every itinerary.

For trips that stay within its covered countries, though, Airalo is one of the easiest ways to keep costs down while still using a single regional eSIM.

Nomad: Best for Selected Routes Covered by Its Smaller Plan

Verdict: A strong choice when your entire itinerary fits within Nomad’s smaller Africa network and you do not need continent-wide coverage.

Nomad takes a more selective approach than Saily or Airalo. When I checked on 20 September 2026, its Africa plan covered 11 countries: Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.

I have used Nomad myself in Africa and found it easy to set up and reliable in normal day-to-day use. The main question is simply whether its country list matches your route.

That narrower footprint works well for focused trips. It covers several useful combinations across East, North and Southern Africa, and its regional packages ranged from 1 GB to 10 GB with hotspot support when I checked.

The limitation is clear: it is not the right regional plan for a wide-ranging trip through countries outside those 11. For broader itineraries, Saily or Airalo make more sense.

Maya Mobile: Best When the Journey Continues Beyond Africa

Best for: journeys extending beyond Africa, higher-data requirements and travelers who prefer one global eSIM for several regions.

Maya Mobile is different from Saily Africa, Airalo Hello Africa and Nomad Africa because its current proposition is a reusable global eSIM rather than a conventional Africa-only bundle. That can make sense when an itinerary combines supported African countries with destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East or another region.

Maya makes the most sense for a longer journey, heavier data use or remote work when a single global setup and hotspot support beat juggling regional eSIMs.

Do not treat “Global” as meaning every African destination automatically works. Check each country on the live coverage list before purchasing.

Mobile Coverage in Africa by Region: What Works Where

The country list matters more than broad claims about connectivity across an entire region. These examples show where the compared regional plans differ, based on the country lists checked in September 2026.

North Africa

Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia are not grouped consistently. Morocco is included by Saily and Nomad, but not by Airalo Hello Africa. Egypt is included by Saily, Airalo and Nomad. Tunisia is included by Nomad but not by the Saily or Airalo regional Africa plans.

For a trip confined to North Africa, compare the regional packages with country-specific and MENA plans. A wider Africa plan is most useful when the itinerary continues into other parts of the continent.

Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, Egypt

East Africa

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are included by Saily, Airalo and Nomad. Rwanda is included by Saily and Airalo but not by Nomad Africa.

Regional inclusion does not guarantee continuous coverage along remote roads or inside national parks. Check the available local network and download offline maps before travelling beyond the principal towns.

For Tanzania, my Vodacom vs Airtel vs Yas comparison explains what I found using local networks on the northern safari circuit and in Zanzibar, including gaps across the Serengeti and patchier reception near Jozani. In Kenya, the Safaricom vs Airtel guide covers the local operators. Check which of those networks your chosen eSIM can access.

Zebras in Ngorongoro, Tanzania

Southern Africa

South Africa is included by all three compared regional plans. Botswana is included by Saily and Airalo, but not by Nomad. Namibia and Zimbabwe are excluded from all three. A complete South Africa–Namibia–Botswana–Zimbabwe itinerary therefore needs an additional country-specific eSIM, compatible global plan or local SIM. Such a journey requires an additional country-specific eSIM, compatible global plan or local SIM.

Botswana landscape

West Africa

Ghana and Senegal are included by Saily and Airalo but not by Nomad Africa. Nigeria is included by all three compared regional plans.

Saily and Airalo cover a larger selection of smaller West African markets. Both include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone and Togo. Airalo also includes Gambia and Mauritania, while Nigeria is the only West African country included in Nomad’s regional Africa plan.

Senegal travel scene

Indian Ocean Islands

Mauritius and Madagascar are included by all three compared regional plans. Seychelles is included by Saily and Airalo but excluded from Nomad Africa. Réunion and Comoros are excluded from all three regional plans.

I have travelled through Comoros, Réunion and Mauritius, and this is an itinerary where the “Africa” label can be particularly misleading. A plan may cover Mauritius but stop working when the journey continues to Réunion or Comoros. For those islands, check country-specific and global plans and consider a local SIM where no suitable travel eSIM is available.

How Much Data Do You Need in Africa?

For maps, messaging, bookings and light browsing, 3–5GB is normally enough for a short trip. For a two-week multi-country journey with frequent navigation and social-media use, 10–20GB provides more flexibility. Consider a larger or unlimited plan for remote work, video calls, frequent uploads or regular hotspot use.

How to Set Up an Africa eSIM Before Your Trip

Apple iPhone setup

  1. Buy your Africa eSIM and open the provider’s QR code or app installation link.
  2. Go to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Add eSIM.
  3. Scan the QR code or follow the provider’s in-app setup instructions.
  4. Name the line Africa eSIM so you do not confuse it with your home SIM.
  5. Keep your home SIM active for SMS codes, banking verification, and WhatsApp continuity.
  6. After arrival, set mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming if the provider requires it.

Android setup

  1. Buy your Africa eSIM and keep the QR code or app installation link ready.
  2. Open Settings → Connections or Network & Internet.
  3. Go to SIMs, SIM Manager, or Mobile Network.
  4. Choose Add eSIM, Download a SIM, or a similar option.
  5. Scan the QR code or complete setup through the provider’s app.
  6. After landing, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and keep your regular SIM available for calls and SMS.

Important: do not delete your eSIM after installation unless the provider tells you to. Many travel eSIMs cannot simply be reinstalled after removal, which can create problems halfway through a trip.

Africa eSIM vs Local SIM: When to Choose What

The better choice depends on how long you are staying, how many countries you are visiting, and how much data you expect to use. For fast-moving or multi-country trips, an eSIM is usually easier. For a longer stay in one country, a local SIM can still be better value.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the practical checks worth making before buying an Africa eSIM for a multi-country trip, safari or longer stay.

Which Africa eSIM covers the most countries?

Airalo’s regional Africa plan had the largest country count among the three regional plans compared here when checked in September 2026, with 36 countries. Saily Africa covered 35 and Nomad Africa covered 11. The largest number is not automatically the best choice: the countries on your own route matter more.

Does one Africa eSIM cover every African country?

No. None of the regional plans compared in this guide covers every African country. Destinations can be split between Africa, MENA, global and country-specific packages, so check the complete country list before buying.

Do Africa eSIMs work on safari?

Partially. An eSIM can be useful around airports, gateway towns, lodges and transfers, but coverage may weaken or disappear inside national parks and on remote roads. Download offline maps before game drives and do not treat any eSIM as a guarantee of continuous safari coverage.

Does Airalo Africa cover Morocco?

No. Morocco is not currently included in Airalo’s 36-country Hello Africa regional plan. Airalo sells separate options for Morocco, so compare those with Saily, Nomad or another suitable plan if Morocco is part of a wider itinerary.

Which Africa eSIM covers Namibia or Zimbabwe?

None of the three regional plans in my comparison covered Namibia or Zimbabwe when checked. For a Southern Africa overland itinerary, expect to add a country-specific eSIM, compatible global plan or local SIM.

Can one Africa eSIM cover Mauritius, Réunion and Comoros?

Not among the main regional plans compared here. Mauritius is widely included, but Réunion and Comoros are the problem. I have travelled through all three. Arrange a separate country, global or local option before leaving Mauritius.

Should I choose a regional or country-specific Africa eSIM?

Choose a regional Africa eSIM when the trip crosses several countries and one plan covers the complete route. For a journey confined to one country, compare a country-specific eSIM or local SIM because it may offer better value, more data or a more suitable local network.

Can I keep receiving SMS on my normal number while using an Africa eSIM?

Usually yes. Keep your normal SIM switched on for banking codes and other verification messages, but select the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable data roaming on your normal SIM. Your mobile operator may still charge for some calls or messages abroad, so check its roaming terms.

Final Thoughts

For an Africa trip, I prefer arriving slightly overprepared to spending the first hours solving mobile-data problems. My travels there have taught me that connectivity rarely fails at a convenient moment. It happens after a late arrival, during a changed transfer or when the route moves beyond the places where getting online is easy.

That is why I now think less about finding one universally “best” eSIM and more about reducing friction along the actual journey. Africa rewards a little preparation: understanding the route, anticipating the gaps and choosing a setup that lets you concentrate on the trip rather than your phone.

Choose by the route you are taking.

For most multi-country Africa trips, I start with Saily’s 35-country plan when all destinations are included. Compare Airalo for smaller fixed-data packages, Nomad when its 11-country footprint fits the itinerary, and Maya Mobile when Africa is part of a longer global journey.

For the best eSIMs in other continents, check my master guide to the best eSIMs for travelers, which also includes regional eSIM guides for Europe, Asia and more.
