Zhangjiajie 2-Day Itinerary: Best First-Time Route Without Rushing

Zhangjiajie is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in China, with sandstone pillars rising above the forest and clouds drifting between the peaks. It feels almost unreal when you first see it, but it is also much bigger and more spread out than many travelers expect. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park alone covers a huge area, while Tianmen Mountain sits on the other side of the city, with separate logistics and its own full-day appeal.

This 2-day Zhangjiajie itinerary is designed for travelers who want to see both without rushing. It gives you one full day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and one full day on Tianmen Mountain, using a smart overnight split to make the trip smoother.

This article focuses on how to structure two full days in Zhangjiajie. For detailed route planning inside the forest park, read my Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide. For ticket types, cable car logistics, and route options on the mountain, read my Tianmen Mountain guide.

Who This 2-Day Zhangjiajie Itinerary Is For

This 2-day Zhangjiajie itinerary is for first-time visitors who want to see the region’s two main highlights without rushing: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain.

Rather than trying to cover every scenic area or side trip, it gives you the cleanest short-stay structure: one full day in the forest park, one full day on Tianmen Mountain, and a split stay between Wulingyuan and Zhangjiajie City to keep the logistics simple.

At a glance

2-Day Zhangjiajie Itinerary Overview

The smoothest way to plan two full days in Zhangjiajie is to sleep near the forest park first, then move back to the city for Tianmen Mountain.

Day 1

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Use your first full day for the classic forest park scenery, focusing on the main first-time visitor route rather than trying to cover every scenic area.

At the end of Day 1

Move to Zhangjiajie City

After the forest park day, move back to Zhangjiajie City. This puts you in the right place for Tianmen Mountain and makes your onward travel easier.

Day 2

Tianmen Mountain

Use your second full day for Tianmen Mountain, keeping it separate from the forest park so you have enough time for the mountain’s main sights and transport logistics.

Why this works: you start Day 1 close to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, avoid backtracking, and finish Day 2 in the most convenient place for trains, flights, or the next stop on your China itinerary.

The Best Way to Spend 2 Days in Zhangjiajie

The best way to spend 2 days in Zhangjiajie is to give each major sight its own day. Spend your first day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, where you get the sandstone pillar scenery that made the region famous. Spend your second day on Tianmen Mountain, which gives you a completely different experience built around cliffs, cable cars, Tianmen Cave, and mountain walkways.

The two places are not side by side. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is best accessed from Wulingyuan, while Tianmen Mountain is easiest from Zhangjiajie City. Trying to combine both in one day usually creates unnecessary transfers, rushed sightseeing, and very little flexibility if weather or queues slow you down.

That is why this itinerary uses a split-stay structure. Stay in or near Wulingyuan for the forest park day, then stay in Zhangjiajie City for Tianmen Mountain and onward travel.

Planning checklist

What to Arrange Before This 2-Day Zhangjiajie Itinerary

Zhangjiajie is much easier when a few things are sorted in advance. For this itinerary, the most useful bookings are your Tianmen Mountain ticket, your Zhangjiajie National Forest Park ticket or Avatar Mountains tour, your first night in Wulingyuan, your second night in Zhangjiajie City, an optional airport transfer to Wulingyuan, and a reliable China eSIM for maps, payments, and ticketing.

Day 2 essential

Tianmen Mountain tickets

Booking ahead matters because Tianmen Mountain uses timed entry and availability can get tight on busy dates. This is one of the most important bookings for the itinerary.

Optional upgrade

Avatar Mountains private tour

A private tour can make the first day easier if you would rather not think about park logistics and just want an efficient route through the classic viewpoints.

Arrival help

Airport transfer to Wulingyuan

This is especially useful if you land late, arrive tired, or want the simplest possible start before your forest park day.

Trip essential

China eSIM & Unrestricted Internet Access

You will need data for Amap, ticket confirmations, mobile payments, and getting around smoothly between Zhangjiajie City and Wulingyuan. My China travel apps guide explains the full phone setup I used for maps, payments, Didi, translation, bookings, VPN access, and mobile data during more than a month in China. If you need Google services, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, or hotel Wi-Fi during your trip, sort out your VPN for blocked apps in China before you arrive.

Stay split

Book the right base for each night

Stay in Wulingyuan for the first night so Day 1 starts smoothly, then move to Zhangjiajie City for the second night so Tianmen Mountain is much easier on Day 2.

My recommendation: book your Tianmen Mountain ticket and your forest park ticket or Avatar Mountains tour first, then lock in your split stay between Wulingyuan and Zhangjiajie City. If you want the deeper logistics behind Day 1 and Day 2, use my Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide and Tianmen Mountain guide.

Day 1: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Your first day is for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the part of the region most travelers picture when they think of the Avatar Mountains. This is where you see the sandstone pillars, high viewpoints, forested valleys, and dramatic cliff scenery that made Zhangjiajie famous.

For a 2-day itinerary, do not try to cover the whole park. The park is large, the entrances are spread out, and the shuttle system takes time to understand. With only one day here, the best approach is to focus on the classic first-time route from Wulingyuan: enter early, head toward the main upper-plateau viewpoints, continue through the most iconic pillar scenery, and return to Wulingyuan in the evening.

This gives you a strong first Zhangjiajie experience without trying to add every scenic area. Places like Golden Whip Stream, Huangshi Village, Yangjiajie, and quieter side sections are better if you have a third day or want to spend more time inside the forest park.

Stay in Wulingyuan before or after this day so you are not wasting your best morning hours transferring from Zhangjiajie City.

Simple Day 1 Route

For most first-time visitors, the simplest Day 1 route is:

  • Start from Wulingyuan
  • Enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park early
  • Focus on the main upper-plateau scenery
  • Prioritize the classic pillar viewpoints
  • Add a lower valley section only if you still have time and energy
  • Spend the night in Zhangjiajie City

In my Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide, I explain the entrances, shuttles, scenic areas, and route choices in depth.

Day 2: Tianmen Mountain

Your second day is for Tianmen Mountain, which feels completely different from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Instead of broad sandstone pillar scenery, this day is about cliffs, walkways, cable cars, Tianmen Cave, and the feeling of moving through the mountain itself.

Tianmen Mountain works best as its own full-day experience. It has separate tickets, separate transport logistics, and a very different rhythm from the forest park. Even if the visit looks simple on a map, the combination of timed entry, queues, summit walks, cave access, and descent logistics can easily fill most of the day.

For this itinerary, I recommend staying in Zhangjiajie City the night before. The city is the most convenient base for Tianmen Mountain and also works better for onward travel by train or flight.

Simple Day 2 Route

For most visitors, the simple structure of the day is:

  • Start from Zhangjiajie City
  • Use your booked Tianmen Mountain route to reach the mountain
  • Spend time on the summit walkways
  • Visit Tianmen Cave
  • Return to Zhangjiajie City

The exact order depends on the route available for your date, which is why I recommend checking my detailed Tianmen Mountain guide before booking tickets.

This itinerary is meant to give you the big picture before you start dealing with the details. Practical Tips

Zhangjiajie is spectacular, but the area is large and the logistics can surprise first‑time visitors. These practical tips helped me move through the region smoothly and make the most of two days.

Essential tips
  • Buy tickets in advance, especially for Tianmen Mountain.
  • Start early on both days.
  • Keep Day 1 and Day 2 separate rather than trying to combine them.
  • Expect long but manageable walking days.
  • Bring water, snacks, and a light layer.
  • Keep some flexibility in case mist slows you down.

How to Get to Zhangjiajie (Flights and Trains)

Most travelers reach Zhangjiajie by high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station or by flying to Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport. For current routes, journey times, station names and transfers to Wulingyuan, see my complete guide to how to get to Zhangjiajie.

If you are continuing deeper into Hunan after Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang Ancient Town is one of the most natural next stops, especially if you want a slower riverside old town after two intense mountain days.

If you’re visiting Zhangjiajie as part of a longer China route, my 4 weeks in China itinerary shows how it fits naturally between major cities like Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guilin, and Shanghai. I also recommend reading my guide about how to plan a trip to China, to make the whole xperience as smooth as possible.

Best Time to Visit Zhangjiajie

Spring and autumn are usually the best times to visit Zhangjiajie, with more comfortable temperatures and a good balance between visibility and crowd levels. Summer is greener but busier, while winter can be atmospheric and quiet if you do not mind colder weather. For a full month-by-month breakdown, read my guidse about the best time to visit China.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 days enough for Zhangjiajie?
Yes. Two full days is enough for a strong first visit to Zhangjiajie if you focus on the region’s two main highlights: one day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and one day on Tianmen Mountain.

What is the best order for a 2-day Zhangjiajie itinerary?
The best order is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park first, then Tianmen Mountain on the second day. This works well because you can start near Wulingyuan for the forest park, then move to Zhangjiajie City for Tianmen Mountain and onward travel.

Do you need to change hotels in Zhangjiajie?
You do not have to, but changing hotels makes this 2-day itinerary smoother. Wulingyuan is better before the forest park day, while Zhangjiajie City is better before Tianmen Mountain and onward travel.

Can you visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain on the same day?
You technically can, but I do not recommend it. The two places have separate logistics, separate entrances, and enough to fill a full day each. Trying to combine them usually makes the day feel rushed.

What should I do with 3 days in Zhangjiajie?
Keep the same basic structure, but give Zhangjiajie National Forest Park more time. Use one day for the classic first-time route, one day for a slower or quieter forest park visit, and one day for Tianmen Mountain.

Final Thoughts

Zhangjiajie is one of the most dramatic landscapes in China, and two full days is enough to experience its two signature sides without turning the trip into a rush. One day gives you the classic Avatar-style pillar scenery of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, while the other gives you the cliff walks, cable car, and Tianmen Cave of Tianmen Mountain.

Use this article to structure the trip, then use my Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide for detailed park logistics, my Tianmen Mountain guide for ticketing and route planning, and my guide about where to stay in Zhangjiajie for the best base on each night.
