Tianmen Mountain Guide (2026): Routes, Tickets, Cable Car & Tianmen Cave
Tianmen Mountain is one of Zhangjiajie’s most spectacular days out, but it is also one of the easiest places to plan from outdated information. I visited independently during our month-long trip through China, and I have since checked the route changes against 2026 operating notices and a fresh local update from Zhangjiajie. The big thing to know now: from October 13, 2026, Routes A and B are withdrawn and only Route C operates. The main downtown cableway will no longer carry passengers; visitors use the Tianmen Cave express cable car from the mountain gate instead.
My experience: Tianmen Mountain is much easier once you understand the sequence. The views, Tianmen Cave and cliff walks are straightforward; the part that trips people up is the transport system and choosing the right ticket.

How I Would Visit Tianmen Mountain in 2026
If you visit from October 13, 2026, Route C is the only route on sale. I would still keep the day free and stay in Zhangjiajie City the night before; the city cableway station remains a useful transfer point for the free shuttle to the mountain gate.

Important change from October 13, 2026: the lower section of the main Tianmen Mountain cableway will stop carrying passengers, Routes A and B will be withdrawn, and Route C will be the only route on sale. The upper section of the main cableway has already been closed for rebuilding since November 2025.
- Until October 12: Routes A and B may still use the lower downtown cableway section and, when conditions allow, the 99-bend road.
- From October 13: go to the mountain gate, take the Tianmen Cave express cable car to Tianmen Cave Square, reach the cave by the 999 steps or the optional paid escalator, then use the seven-stage through-mountain escalator to the summit.
- Return: come back the same way by escalators and the express cable car. The 99-bend road is no longer part of the visitor transport route.
A free shuttle is expected to run from the city cableway station to the mountain gate, taking about 20 minutes. All three summit glass walkways were reported open as of October 1, 2026. The latest arrangement was shared with me by China Fantasy Travel in Zhangjiajie, which obtained the operator notice and confirmed the current setup locally. There is no announced reopening date for the main cableway.
When a Tianmen Mountain Tour Is Worth Paying For
I would book a tour if I wanted someone else to handle the ticketing and route logistics—not because Tianmen Mountain itself is difficult to explore.
The real value is having timed entry, passport registration, the current Route C logistics and any same-day transport changes handled for you.
If you are comfortable using WeChat and checking the current route yourself, visiting independently is completely realistic.

Is Tianmen Mountain Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you have two days in Zhangjiajie. Tianmen Mountain feels completely different from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Instead of sandstone pillars and a huge scenic area, you get cableways, engineered cliff paths, glass walkways, Tianmen Cave and dramatic views over the 99-bend mountain road.
If you have only one day in Zhangjiajie, I would still prioritize the forest park. If you have two days, Tianmen Mountain is the obvious second day. That is why I use it as a separate full-day component in my Zhangjiajie 2-day itinerary.
How Tianmen Mountain Is Laid Out
Think of Tianmen Mountain as three connected zones rather than one single viewpoint.
1. The Summit
This is where you find the East and West cliffside walking lines, viewpoints, glass walkways, forest paths and Tianmen Mountain Temple. You will usually spend the largest part of the day here.
2. Tianmen Cave
The giant natural arch—often called Heaven’s Gate—sits below the summit. The seven-level through-mountain escalator links the cave area with the top. The famous 999 steps rise from the lower cave plaza.
3. The Transport System
This is the part that causes most confusion because the transport system changed again in October 2026. From October 13, the main downtown cableway no longer carries passengers and Routes A and B disappear. Visitors instead use the free shuttle to the mountain gate, the Tianmen Cave express cable car, the cave-area escalators and the through-mountain escalators to reach the summit.
If you are visiting before October 13, older Route A/B/C descriptions may still apply. After that date, Route C is the only normal visitor sequence.
Tianmen Mountain Ticket Price in 2026: What You Actually Pay
The cleanest way to understand the price is to separate the official admission fee from the transport package most visitors buy.

The official Hunan price notice confirms the CNY 72 admission component. It does not mean you can do the normal Tianmen Mountain route for CNY 72 once the required transport is added. See the official admission-price notice.
How to Book Tianmen Mountain Tickets as a Foreign Visitor
The ticketing is one of the reasons Tianmen Mountain can feel harder to plan than it is. You are not simply buying “entry”; you are choosing a date and time slot, and you need to make sure the transport description matches the current operating setup.
- Open WeChat and search for the “张家界一机游” mini program.
- Enter the attraction-ticket section and select Tianmen Mountain.
- Choose your visit date and available entry time.
- If you are visiting from October 13, 2026, select the Route C option shown for your date. Routes A and B are withdrawn from that date.
- Enter traveler names and passport numbers exactly as shown in each passport.
- Pay and save the order confirmation or QR code.
- Before leaving your hotel, check whether weather or maintenance has changed the route sequence.
If you are comfortable with WeChat mini programs, Tianmen Mountain is perfectly manageable independently. Tianmen Mountain Route A vs B vs C: What Changes on October 13, 2026?
The choice effectively disappears from October 13, 2026. Routes A and B are withdrawn and Route C becomes the only route. If you visit on or before October 12, A and B may still operate under the temporary reconstruction setup; after that, plan around Route C.

Route A: Available Only Through October 12
Route A starts at the downtown cableway station and uses the lower part of the famous city cableway, followed by the mountain road, Tianmen Cave, the summit and the express cableway descent.
If you are visiting on or before October 12 and Route A is still shown for sale, it remains the most varied of the temporary routes. Do not plan around it for October 13 or later, when Route A is withdrawn.
Route B: Also Withdrawn From October 13
Route B covers almost the same ingredients in reverse. Before October 13, you can start at the mountain gate, take the express cableway to Tianmen Cave, continue to the summit and later return toward downtown via the sightseeing bus and lower main cableway.
From October 13, Route B is no longer sold because the lower main cableway section stops carrying passengers.
Route C: The Only Route From October 13
Route C uses the Tianmen Cave express cableway in both directions. From the mountain gate, ride up to Tianmen Cave Square, reach the cave by the 999 steps or the optional paid escalator, take the seven-stage through-mountain escalator to the summit, then return the same way.
You still get Tianmen Cave, the summit paths and the main viewpoints, but you no longer ride the downtown cableway or the 99-bend road as part of the visitor route.
What Is Included in a Tianmen Mountain Route Ticket?
From October 13, the normal Route C package is designed around the current transport chain, so check your live booking page rather than assuming every component is sold separately. Typical inclusions are:
- scenic-area admission
- the cableway journeys assigned to your route
- the seven-level through-mountain escalator between Tianmen Cave and the summit
- the sightseeing buses and shuttles required by that route
Possible extras can include the glass-walkway shoe-cover charge, the separate escalator beside the 999 steps and the short summit sightseeing chairlift. The through-mountain escalator and the optional stair-bypass escalator are not the same thing.
Is the Full Tianmen Mountain Cable Car Open in 2026?
Not as the historic nonstop downtown-to-summit journey. When I visited, that complete ascent was one of the most memorable parts of Tianmen Mountain: you left the city below and kept climbing until the cliffs took over.
The upper main cableway section from the middle station to the summit has been closed for rebuilding since November 2025. From October 13, 2026, the lower section between downtown and the middle station also stops carrying passengers, so the main cableway is no longer part of the normal visitor route.
From that date, visitors use the Tianmen Cave express cable car from the mountain gate instead. No reopening date for the main cableway has been announced, so do not book from an older guide that still promises the famous continuous ride from downtown to the summit.
What to Do at the Top of Tianmen Mountain
The summit is where the day becomes less logistical. You are mostly walking along paved cliff paths, forest sections and viewpoints on the East and West sides of the mountain.
I would not rush this part just to reach Tianmen Cave. The summit walkways are one of the best parts of Tianmen Mountain, especially when cloud moves in and out of the valleys.
This is not a technical hike. The difficulty is time on your feet, stairs and exposure rather than rough terrain.
Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalks: Which Are Open?
The glass walkways are short, exposed and fun rather than a major hike. If you dislike heights, skip them; you lose very little of the overall mountain experience.
One useful October 2026 update: all three summit glass walkways were reported open as of October 1, 2026. The East Line walkway had previously been closed for maintenance, but the latest local check found it open again alongside the other summit glass sections. Conditions can still change, so check again if walking on the glass is important to you.
Tianmen Cave and the 999 Steps: Do You Have to Climb Them?
No. Tianmen Cave is the huge natural arch that gives the mountain its most recognizable landmark, but you do not have to climb all 999 steps to complete the visit.
The seven-level through-mountain escalator connects the cave area with the summit. A separate escalator beside the 999-step staircase can also bypass the steps when it is operating, usually for an additional charge.
If you do take the stairs, they are steep and tiring rather than technically difficult. Take your time. Tianmen Cave is impressive from both the upper connection and the lower plaza, so skipping the staircase does not mean skipping the sight.
The 99-Bend Road: Will Your Route Include It?
If you visit through October 12, Routes A and B may still use the famous mountain road between the middle cableway station and Tianmen Cave when conditions allow. From October 13, the 99-bend road is no longer part of the normal visitor transport route because only Route C operates.
The road is still one of Tianmen Mountain’s defining sights. From above, the switchbacks give the mountain much of its visual drama and make the vertical scale of the place easier to understand.
Do not book a post-October-13 visit expecting a bus ride up the 99 bends. You can still see the road from viewpoints, but Route C uses the express cable car and escalators instead.
How Long Do You Need for Tianmen Mountain?
Under the Route C-only setup from October 13, I would allow about 4–6 hours including queues, Tianmen Cave, the summit loop and the return journey. I would still keep the day largely free rather than building a tight connection around the minimum time.
Do not try to combine Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park on the same day. They are separate attractions in different parts of the region and both deserve time. Use my Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide for that other day.
Is Tianmen Mountain Difficult? What if You Are Afraid of Heights?
Physically, Tianmen Mountain is moderate. You spend hours walking, but most surfaces are paved paths, stairs, escalators and engineered cliff walkways. The 999 steps are the steepest optional challenge.
Mentally, the mountain can feel much harder if you dislike heights. The cableways, cliff paths and glass sections are exposed. The good news is that the glass walkways are optional and there are railings throughout the normal walking routes.
If you are mildly nervous around heights, I would still go and skip the glass. If sustained exposure genuinely ruins the experience for you, Tianmen Mountain may be less enjoyable than the forest park.
Best Time to Visit Tianmen Mountain
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for walking and generally the best balance of temperature and visibility. Summer is busier and can be hot or hazy. Winter can be spectacular, but snow and ice can close paths, stairs or parts of the transport system.
I would not obsess over a perfectly clear forecast. Tianmen Mountain can look excellent in cloud, and a bit of mist makes the cliffs feel much more dramatic. What matters more is whether wind, ice or heavy rain affects the transport system.
Where to Stay for Tianmen Mountain
For the Tianmen Mountain day itself, stay in Zhangjiajie City. From October 13, you no longer board the main cableway downtown, but the city cableway station remains useful because a free shuttle connects it with the mountain gate in about 20 minutes.

Practical Tianmen Mountain Tips I Would Follow
- Book ahead. Timed slots still matter even though Route C becomes the only route from October 13.
- Ignore outdated Route A/B advice for visits from October 13. Check the live operating notice because the transport system can change again during the rebuild.
- Stay in Zhangjiajie City the night before if Tianmen Mountain is your first stop the next morning.
- Bring your passport. Real-name ticketing is not optional.
- Wear shoes with decent grip. You will be walking for hours even though this is not a technical hike.
- Carry water and a snack. It is a long day and mountain prices are higher.
- Do not rush the summit. The cliff paths are not filler between the cable car and Tianmen Cave.
- Do not panic about mist. Cloud can improve the atmosphere; dangerous weather is the real concern.

Tianmen Mountain vs Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
They are not substitutes. Tianmen Mountain is compact, engineered and dramatic: the express cable car, cliff paths, Tianmen Cave, summit walkways and views over the 99-bend road. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is larger, slower and all about the sandstone-pillar landscape.
If you have one day, I would choose the forest park. If you have two days, do both on separate days. That division is exactly what I recommend in my 2-day Zhangjiajie itinerary.
My Recommendation
If you are visiting from October 13, 2026, the decision is simple: book Route C, because Routes A and B are withdrawn. If you visit on or before October 12 and Route A is still available, it gives you the most varied temporary sequence.
More important than old route advice is the live transport sequence for your date. From October 13, the main downtown cableway does not carry passengers and the 99-bend road is no longer part of the visitor transport route. Use the express cable car from the mountain gate and check again before departure in case the rebuild changes the setup.
Once you have finished Tianmen Mountain, Fenghuang Ancient Town is one of the easiest onward stops if you want to follow Zhangjiajie with a slower riverside old town.
