Tanzania Northern Circuit Itinerary: 7, 8 or 10 Days in Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Three ways to explore Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro—with realistic travel days and plenty of time for the wildlife.

A Tanzania Northern Circuit safari looks wonderfully compact on a map: Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are all in the same part of the country. On the ground, the distances are another matter. You can spend hours on rough roads getting from one wonderful place to the next, and a safari that visits every famous park is not necessarily the one that gives you the most time watching wildlife.

I traveled through Tarangire, the central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara on a five-day private safari. We saw elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, hippos and even a distant rhino in the crater. I loved the trip, but we only had one night in the Serengeti. That was the compromise. Our tented camp was surrounded by the savannah, and we had barely settled in before it was time to leave. Another one to three nights there would have made a huge difference.

My advice for a first Northern Circuit safari is simple: give it at least seven days, and choose eight if you have the time. Ten days opens up a second Serengeti region when the migration is in the right place. Here are three routes that make good use of those extra days.

Affiliate disclosure: Some booking links are affiliate links. If you book through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

My recommendation

Eight days is the best balance for most people. Seven days gives you the main parks if you stick to central Serengeti. Ten days is useful when a second Serengeti region makes sense for the season. With eight, you gain a third full Serengeti day without another camp move.

One thing to allow for: These are 7-day/6-night, 8-day/7-night and 10-day/9-night safaris, starting around Arusha. Flying into Kilimanjaro Airport after a long journey? Spend that first night in Arusha. It is a far better start than going straight from an international flight into hours of driving.

Route 1 · 7 days / 6 nights

7-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit Itinerary

Arusha → Tarangire → Central Serengeti → Karatu → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha. Seven days, three main wildlife areas and no exhausting attempt to reach the northern Serengeti.

With one week, keep central Serengeti at the heart of the trip. Start among Tarangire’s elephants and baobabs, then spend three nights on the Serengeti plains before visiting Ngorongoro. Those extra Serengeti nights address the one thing I missed most on my own shorter safari.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire: elephants and baobabs

Leave Arusha after breakfast and head toward Tarangire for your first proper game drive. Spend the afternoon around the river and the baobab country rather than rushing onward. Tarangire is an excellent introduction to Tanzania: elephants, varied woodland and a completely different landscape from the Serengeti. Continue to accommodation near Karatu after the game drive.

Overnight: Karatu or around Lake Manyara

Day 2

Karatu to central Serengeti

Travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and across the Naabi Hill approach into the Serengeti. Expect a long, often bumpy journey with stops and paperwork; it takes up a substantial part of the day. Look for wildlife as you enter the park and reach your Seronera-area camp with time to enjoy the setting.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 3

A full day on the central Serengeti plains

Three nights give you two complete Serengeti days. Follow the wildlife with your guide rather than ticking sightings off a checklist: lions around kopjes, giraffes browsing near woodland, antelope on the open plains, and hippos where water remains. There is no need to chase the migration across the park if the herds are elsewhere.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 4

Another full Serengeti game-drive day

A second uninterrupted day gives you a much better chance of experiencing more than the quick highlights. Change area, revisit promising sightings and spend time with the wildlife you find rather than constantly pushing toward the next lodge. The vastness of the landscape is part of what makes this park special.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 5

Serengeti back to Karatu

Enjoy a morning drive if your park-entry timing permits, then start east toward the Naabi Hill gate and Ngorongoro highlands. This is primarily a travel day. A comfortable lodge near Karatu is a sensible base for the crater the following morning.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater game drive

Keep the entire day free for Ngorongoro, including the drive to the rim and the crater descent. The descent brings you into grassland, marsh and lake habitats within the caldera walls. On my own visit I saw a rhino in the distance and plenty of other wildlife. The unusual setting makes the crater completely different from a Serengeti drive.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 7

Return toward Arusha

Finish after breakfast and travel back to Arusha or onward to your airport. A Lake Manyara visit is possible only if your departure arrangements genuinely leave time; Do not squeeze a full park drive ahead of a tight flight. If you want a meaningful Manyara visit, add another day or swap a less important activity.

Overnight: Safari ends; add Arusha night if needed

Why there is no northern Serengeti in this route: the transfer from Seronera toward the Mara River region can take much of a day. With just seven days, keep the nights in central Serengeti. A distant second camp means more time in the vehicle and less time watching animals.

Route 2 · 8 days / 7 nights

8-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit Itinerary: My Preferred Route

Keep the same three major parks as the seven-day circuit, but add one complete Serengeti day. One additional night makes a noticeable difference when reaching the park takes so long.

Eight days gets the balance right. There is time for long game drives, evenings back at the tented camp and those enormous Serengeti landscapes without checking out almost as soon as you arrive. The route is still efficient and stays in central Serengeti, not the northern migration area.

Day 1

Tarangire National Park

Travel from Arusha, spend the day on a guided game drive and overnight toward Karatu. The first day is about elephants, river landscapes and settling into the rhythm of safari.

Overnight: Karatu / Lake Manyara area

Day 2

Drive through Ngorongoro to the Serengeti

Begin the long journey west after breakfast. Stop as required for park and conservation area entry, and reach a central Serengeti camp after some afternoon wildlife viewing.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 3

First full central Serengeti safari day

Use your first complete day to explore the Seronera area and nearby plains with your guide. There is enough wildlife variety here to justify taking your time.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 4

Second full Serengeti day

Follow the day’s sightings. Some of my favorite moments on safari were not dramatic hunts but watching ordinary behavior—zebras moving across grassland, giraffes browsing and elephants going about their day.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 5

Third full Serengeti day

Stay another day rather than moving camp. With more time, the guide can vary the route according to conditions and recent sightings, and you can spend longer at a particularly good encounter without watching the clock.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 6

Travel back toward Karatu

Leave central Serengeti and cross the highlands, allowing most of the day for the drive, gates and occasional stops. Arrive in time to rest ahead of Ngorongoro.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater

Leave early for the crater, spend the permitted game-drive time on the floor—generally up to about six hours—and return to the same Karatu lodge. There is no need for another long drive after such a full morning and afternoon.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 8

Karatu to Arusha

Drive back to Arusha. If you want Lake Manyara as a full park visit, add a ninth day or replace another activity; a rushed stop before an onward flight would not be my first choice.

Overnight: Safari ends

What the eighth day really buys

That extra day stays in the Serengeti. No moving camp, no packing and no long transfer—just another full day to follow wildlife with your guide. After my own short stay in the park, that is exactly where I see the value in adding a day.

Expansive Serengeti savannah under a wide sky
I could spend hours out on those plains, even between wildlife sightings. It is hard to get a sense of their scale in just one day.

Ngorongoro belongs in all three itineraries. Its enclosed highland landscape is an extraordinary contrast with the Serengeti.
Route 3 · 10 days / 9 nights

10-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit Itinerary: Central and Northern Serengeti

Tarangire → Karatu → central Serengeti → northern Serengeti → central Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha. A longer, seasonal version for travelers who want two Serengeti bases and accept the extra driving.

With ten days, there is finally enough time to spend several nights in two different Serengeti areas. This version heads north for the Mara River migration season, usually from roughly July to October. Outside those months, change the route rather than copying it unchanged: spend longer in central Serengeti or consider the southern plains and Ndutu when the herds are there.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire

Start with the elephants and baobabs of Tarangire. With ten days available, you can sleep close to the park rather than push straight onward to Karatu.

Overnight: Tarangire area

Day 2

A second Tarangire drive, then Karatu

Use the morning for another section of Tarangire. After lunch, continue toward Karatu, which positions you well for the onward route through Ngorongoro.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 3

Long drive to central Serengeti

Head west via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Naabi Hill, arriving in central Serengeti. Use whatever time remains for wildlife watching near your camp.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 4

Full day in central Serengeti

Spend a proper day around Seronera and neighboring habitats. Watch lions, giraffes and antelope, and allow time for sightings that cannot be scheduled.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 5

Transfer north toward Kogatende

Make the drive into northern Serengeti, potentially taking four to six hours or more with game-drive stops and road conditions. This is a change of safari region, not a quick transfer; do not schedule a guaranteed river crossing on arrival.

Overnight: Northern Serengeti

Day 6

Northern Serengeti wildlife day

Explore the northern landscape and Mara River region with your guide. If migrating herds are nearby, river activity may be part of the day—but a crossing can never be booked or promised. Resident wildlife remains worth your time.

Overnight: Northern Serengeti

Day 7

Northern back to central Serengeti

Travel south toward central Serengeti, watching for animals en route. This is another substantial transfer day, so the extra northern nights need to be worthwhile for your dates.

Overnight: Central Serengeti

Day 8

Central Serengeti to Karatu

Drive east out of the Serengeti and across the highlands. Arrive at a comfortable Karatu lodge, ready for the crater tomorrow.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 9

Ngorongoro Crater safari

Descend for a crater-floor game drive, generally limited to about six hours, and return to Karatu afterward. The steep crater walls and lakes make this completely different from the open Serengeti plains.

Overnight: Karatu

Day 10

Return to Arusha

Travel back to Arusha or arrange an onward connection with a sensible buffer. Add Lake Manyara only if the travel schedule can accommodate a proper park visit.

Overnight: Safari ends

Traveling in January–March instead? Consider a route that includes the Ndutu / southern Serengeti plains, where calving-season wildlife is often the main attraction. Ndutu lies in the wider Serengeti ecosystem, largely within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and requires a different overnight sequence. Ask your operator to redesign the ten days for the season rather than simply substituting a southern camp into this northern itinerary.

Bookable 7-, 8- and 10-Day Tanzania Safaris

If you prefer to book a complete package, these are three options worth comparing. Look closely at the nights in the Serengeti: the seven-day luxury tour includes an arrival night in Arusha and a stop at Lake Manyara, while the eight- and ten-day safaris are more focused on the migration. None follows the exact same overnight sequence as my routes. Before you pay, check the camp names, vehicle arrangements, park fees and whether the trip suits your dates.

What each place adds

Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Lake Manyara: Where Should You Spend Your Time?

Tarangire: start with elephants and a different landscape

Tarangire deserves to be more than a box ticked on the way to Serengeti. The park’s baobabs, river, seasonal swamps and elephants make it a strong opening act. On my own trip I particularly enjoyed watching elephants share a waterhole area with smaller animals. It was a completely different setting from the wide Serengeti plains we reached later.

One good day works on a shorter circuit. With ten days, a second drive gives you more time to explore without immediately moving on.

An elephant and warthogs near water in Tarangire—the sort of scene worth stopping for rather than rushing to the next park.

Serengeti: give it the most nights

What stayed with me was the space. The Serengeti can feel almost empty between sightings, then suddenly you are watching lions under a bush or giraffes moving against that enormous horizon. Our short stay in a tented camp in the savannah made the park feel even more immersive. That atmosphere stayed with me long after the safari ended; it deserves more than a quick overnight.

For a first visit outside a tightly targeted migration trip, central Serengeti around Seronera is the sensible base. It has a good mix of habitats and resident wildlife. If you’re chasing a particular migration phase, camp geography starts to matter a lot more—and an extra day spent on the road can be the price of reaching it.

Ngorongoro: different scenery, concentrated wildlife

Ngorongoro is not another copy of the Serengeti. The descent into the crater, the steep walls and the mix of open grassland and wetlands give the drive an entirely different atmosphere. We saw a rhino at a distance, along with zebras and other wildlife. Ngorongoro belongs on the seven-day route too.

One dedicated crater day is a sound starting point. If you are on a shared vehicle tour, check whether the package price includes the vehicle’s crater service fee as well as conservation-area entry.

Panos looking at zebras inside Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania
I particularly love zebras, and Ngorongoro gave us plenty of time to observe them in the crater landscape.

Lake Manyara: worthwhile, but not at Serengeti’s expense

I visited Lake Manyara too, and enjoyed the greener groundwater forest, baboons and birdlife. It is especially attractive if you like a change from open savannah landscapes. On a seven- or eight-day circuit, though, Lake Manyara should not cost you a complete Serengeti day.

If you have an additional day around Karatu or want to prioritize forest and birds, Lake Manyara becomes a more attractive inclusion. And no, the famous tree-climbing lions are not a sighting anyone can guarantee.

Lake Manyara gives a very different impression from the Serengeti, particularly in the forested section near the park entrance.
Driving distances in practice

Tanzania Northern Circuit Driving Times: Plan for the Roads, Not Just the Distance

A drive described as three hours on paper can take much longer once you include the gates, road conditions and wildlife stops. On our own private-safari programme, some legs were quoted at around three hours. In practice, the experience depends on the location of your camp, gravel roads, gate queues, wildlife stops and how much game driving is included along the way.

RoutePlanning allowanceWhy it can run longer
Arusha → TarangireAbout 2–3 hours to the park areaPickup location, traffic, final gate and lodge location
Tarangire / Lake Manyara area → KaratuAbout 45–90 minutes, depending on startActual park exit and accommodation location
Karatu → central Serengeti (Seronera)Allow roughly 5–7 hours, sometimes longerNgorongoro transit, Naabi Hill, rough roads and stops
Central Serengeti → northern SerengetiOften 4–6+ hoursRemote camp location and game-drive pace
Central Serengeti → KaratuAllow roughly 5–7 hours, sometimes longerGravel-road pace, park permits and wildlife stops
Karatu → Ngorongoro entranceRoughly 30–60 minutesEntrance gate is not the crater floor; add the rim and descent
Karatu → ArushaAbout 2–3 hoursTraffic and exact destination

Use these times to work out whether a day looks reasonable, then ask your guide or operator how long the drive will take to your actual camp. In the Serengeti, its location makes a huge difference.

Open landscapes along the long road from the Ngorongoro region to Serengeti
One of the most important improvements you can make to a Northern Circuit safari is allowing enough time for the journey itself.
Wildlife follows the season

When to Go and Which Part of the Serengeti to Include

You can have a wonderful Northern Circuit safari outside peak migration months. Tarangire’s dry-season elephant concentrations are different from Serengeti’s year-round resident predators, and Ngorongoro remains appealing throughout the year. For a general first safari, choose dates that work for your budget and wider trip, then pick Serengeti camps that suit the season.

WhenRegion worth discussingImportant limitation
January–MarchNdutu / southern Serengeti ecosystem for calving-season herdsNdutu is not simply a northern-camp substitute; the overnight route changes
April–JuneCentral and sometimes western movement, depending on rainRain and road conditions vary; herds are mobile
July–OctoberNorthern Serengeti for the Mara River area; central Serengeti remains usefulCrossings are unpredictable and camps can be expensive
November–DecemberCentral and southward movements after the short rainsDo not assume last year’s timing will repeat

On our safari I enjoyed the Serengeti enormously without treating a dramatic migration crossing as a requirement. A lion resting in the grass, a herd of elephants or a family of giraffes can be just as memorable. If the Great Migration is your main reason to visit, though, choose the location and number of nights more carefully than the marketing description on a tour listing.

River crossings are one of the migration’s most dramatic scenes, but nobody can promise you will see one on your dates.
The practical cost

What Does a 7-, 8- or 10-Day Tanzania Safari Cost?

There is no single price for a Northern Circuit safari. A group camping tour, a private mid-range lodge safari and a premium trip with high-end tented camps can differ by thousands of dollars. Time of year, Serengeti camp location and the number of people sharing a Land Cruiser matter almost as much as the number of days.

For comparison, our own five-day private safari for two cost US$1,800 per person, with a twin room, private Land Cruiser, guide, full-board accommodation, transfers and the listed park visits. I thought it was good value. Prices have moved since we booked, though, and a seven- or ten-day safari is a different proposition. Compare complete quotes for your dates rather than relying on a price advertised for a different month or group size.

Safari styleWhat typically changesWhat to compare
Shared group / campingLower vehicle cost per person; simpler accommodation; group paceCompare exact time in the Serengeti and departure days
Private mid-rangeOwn guide/vehicle, lodge or tented-camp mix, flexible game drivesBest match for the type of safari I personally enjoyed
Premium / luxuryHigher-end camps, more services, sometimes internal flightsWorth paying for if camp position and wildlife time improve, not just decor

The spread between actual offers is substantial. For example, the seven-day luxury safari linked above was advertised at around US$4,840 per person when checked in October 2026; more basic private or shared tours can cost considerably less. An extra Serengeti night, a remote northern camp or an internal flight can change the quote by hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Compare what each package includes before comparing the totals.

Park fees are a major fixed cost. Published TANAPA tariff information and current operator breakdowns show why these costs add up. A Serengeti adult non-resident entry fee is commonly quoted at US$82.60 per day in the higher season, including VAT (with lower seasonal rates), and Ngorongoro has separate conservation-area fees plus a crater vehicle service charge commonly quoted at US$295 per vehicle. Published tariff pages are not always updated promptly, so ask the operator for the applicable fee breakdown before paying.

Particularly check park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry, crater vehicle service charges, Serengeti concession or camping fees, VAT, game-drive vehicle, fuel, guide, airport transfers, full board, bottled water, park-entry validity, tips and drinks. A cheaper-looking package can become expensive once these extras are added.

Don’t judge packages by the headline daily rate. Ask for the total price per person, the number of nights inside Serengeti, every camp’s actual location, and a written list of included versus excluded park and vehicle fees. Those details often tell you more than a row of luxury-camp photographs.

Sleeping locations matter

Where to Stay on a Northern Circuit Safari

On safari, the location of your bed matters almost as much as the quality of the room. Two camps can both call themselves “Serengeti” and still be hours apart. Before booking, check the exact location of every camp on a map.

Karatu: a sensible base for Ngorongoro

We stayed at Marera Valley Lodge near Karatu and loved it. The setting beside coffee-growing countryside was wonderfully relaxing after long game drives, and the rooms and food were excellent. That kind of comfortable base makes sense before or after a crater visit. It does not mean every Serengeti night should be spent driving back to Karatu.

Inside central Serengeti: worth the effort

Our night at Kon Tiki Serengeti Camp stood out for its setting in the savannah. The food and facilities were good, but what mattered most was simply being surrounded by the landscape. Extra nights in a well-positioned camp are worth more to me than a grander room with hours of driving each day.

Northern Serengeti: only if it suits the season

For a river-crossing-oriented safari, camps around Kogatende and the Mara River can be worth a significant premium in the right months. But moving from central Serengeti to the north isn’t a casual afternoon hop. For a general seven- or eight-day safari, central Serengeti makes more sense than spending hours relocating.

Booking wisely

Seven Things to Confirm Before Booking a Tanzania Safari

  1. Show me the exact overnight sequence. “Three days in Serengeti” can mean only one complete day of game drives once arrival and departure are counted.
  2. Name every camp and its location. “Serengeti lodge” is not enough to estimate drives or wildlife access.
  3. Confirm whether the vehicle is private. Ask how many travelers are sharing, how seats are assigned and whether all game drives use the same guide.
  4. Confirm all park and crater charges. Look for explicit conservation, concession, transit, vehicle and descent fees.
  5. Ask how the itinerary changes by season. A northern migration route in February should raise questions unless the operator has a specific explanation.
  6. Check cancellation terms and support. Understand payment schedule, change fees, breakdown contingencies and what happens if flights are delayed.
  7. Leave time around international flights. An airport pickup is useful, but a long safari transfer immediately after landing is not always a great start.

We booked directly with a local operator, Serengeti Smile. Communication was good, our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and the trip felt like good value for money. Our safari vehicle did break down at the very end, after our planned activities were completed, so it did not spoil the safari. That is why breakdown support belongs on the list of questions to ask any operator. When booking through a marketplace, check the actual provider and day-by-day itinerary just as carefully.

Beyond the national parks, the area around Arusha and Moshi has more to offer. Seeing Kilimanjaro from near Kikuletwa was a lovely bonus before our safari.
A few more decisions

Lake Manyara, Materuni, Kikuletwa and Safari Connectivity

Should you include Lake Manyara?

It’s not an inferior park, simply a different experience. I enjoyed its forest, baboons and birds. But on a seven-day Northern Circuit, the Serengeti gets my extra day. Save Manyara for a route with an additional day or when forest habitats appeal especially strongly to you.

Materuni Waterfalls and Kikuletwa Springs: before or after safari

Before our safari, we also visited Materuni Waterfalls and Kikuletwa Hot Springs from the Arusha/Moshi area. Materuni’s scenery and coffee-growing setting were memorable, and seeing Kilimanjaro in the distance from the Kikuletwa area was wonderful. They make good additions outside the seven, eight or ten safari days. They deserve a separate day, not time taken away from the Serengeti. The changing facilities at Kikuletwa were very basic and not especially clean when I visited, so arrive prepared.

Will your phone work in the Serengeti?

Not reliably. Signal can disappear once you leave towns and some lodge areas, whatever eSIM provider you use. Download maps and keep your safari confirmations accessible offline. I explain the regional-plan and local-network trade-offs in my Kenya and Tanzania safari eSIM guide, so you can choose connectivity according to your actual route rather than a marketing coverage map.

What if you are deciding between Kenya and Tanzania?

I have traveled through both countries on safari. Kenya’s Maasai Mara is excellent for a more compact trip, while the Tanzania circuit rewards extra days and a willingness to travel farther between parks. My Kenya vs Tanzania safari comparison looks at wildlife, budgets, migration timing and the strengths of each country. If Kenya is already in your plan, my seven-day Kenya safari route is another useful benchmark.

Wide panorama of Lake Manyara and the surrounding Tanzanian landscape
Lake Manyara is worth visiting when the schedule permits, but on a shorter circuit, keep the extra day for the Serengeti.
Quick answers

Tanzania Northern Circuit Itinerary FAQ

Is seven days enough for a Northern Circuit safari?

Yes, if you stay focused on Tarangire, central Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Seven safari days and six nights give you a credible route with three nights in central Serengeti. There is not enough time for a sensible detour to northern Serengeti.

Is eight or ten days better in Tanzania?

Eight is my preferred general first-time length because one additional Serengeti night buys a full extra wildlife day. Ten becomes attractive if you want a seasonal second Serengeti region or a less compressed route with more time in each place.

How many nights should I stay in the Serengeti?

Plan on at least three Serengeti nights in a seven-day safari, four in an eight-day safari, and around five on a ten-day route that covers two Serengeti regions. The number of complete game-drive days matters more than the headline number of nights.

Can you see the Big Five on a seven-day Northern Circuit safari?

It is possible, but never guaranteed. Lions, elephants and buffalo are often seen on these routes, while leopards are more elusive. Ngorongoro Crater gives you a chance of seeing black rhinos, though they can be far away. Wildlife sightings depend on luck as well as your guide and the time spent in each park.

Should I visit Lake Manyara or spend another day in Serengeti?

For a first Northern Circuit safari with limited time, another Serengeti day is usually the better choice. Lake Manyara makes more sense if you want its forest and birdlife or have enough time to add it without shortening the Serengeti.

What is the best month for a northern Tanzania safari?

There is no universal best month. June to October is generally attractive for drier conditions and Tarangire wildlife concentrations, while January to March often suits southern Serengeti/Ndutu calving interests. For northern Mara River migrations, July to October is the usual planning window, but movement varies with rain.

Can a Serengeti river crossing be guaranteed on a safari?

No. The Great Migration is a natural movement following food and rainfall. Even a well-positioned migration camp with several nights cannot guarantee that wildebeest will cross a river while you are watching.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost per person?

It depends on trip length, group size, park fees, season and accommodation standard. Our shorter private trip was priced at US$1,800 per person at the time, but that is not a current seven- or ten-day quote. Request a complete current rate for your exact dates and camps.

Should I choose a private or group safari?

A private vehicle gives you more control over pacing, stops and how long to watch a sighting, but costs more for small parties. A well-run group safari can be good value. Check the vehicle capacity and how much time is spent transferring rather than game driving.

Is it better to fly into the Serengeti?

A fly-in safari can save substantial road time, especially when reaching remote northern camps, but adds expense and may impose luggage limits. Compare the full door-to-door journey and what wildlife viewing you lose or gain.

Where should I sleep before a Ngorongoro Crater day?

Karatu is a practical base, with a range of lodges. A lodge on or near the crater rim can reduce morning driving, but is often more expensive. Check the exact property position rather than relying on a general Ngorongoro label.

Does the arrival day count as one of the seven safari days?

Not in the routes above. They start when you leave Arusha for Tarangire, so seven days means six nights on safari. Some packaged tours include airport arrival as Day 1, leaving fewer days for game drives. Always check the itinerary day by day before booking.

A route worth taking properly

The One Thing Missing From My Safari: More Serengeti Time

The Northern Circuit is superb because it brings together environments that really are different: Tarangire’s elephants and baobabs, the immense Serengeti plains and the enclosed world of Ngorongoro Crater. My shorter trip convinced me how good that combination is—and how much more of it I wanted.

If you have seven days, keep the route focused. With eight, use that extra time for another complete Serengeti day. With ten, you can explore a second Serengeti region when it suits the season, but don’t underestimate the driving. For me, a good safari means time with the animals and the landscape, not moving camp every night.

When you request safari quotes, compare the same things across operators: the exact nights in each park, where you will actually sleep, who shares the vehicle and which fees are included. That tells you far more about the trip you are buying than the number of park names in a brochure.
