Where to Stay on Isabela, Galápagos: Best Hotels & Areas in Puerto Villamil
Beachfront or central? After staying in Puerto Villamil, I have a clear preference—and a short list of other hotels worth considering.
Choosing where to stay on Isabela Island is simpler than choosing a base on Santa Cruz: almost everyone stays in Puerto Villamil. What matters is whether you want the beach outside your door, restaurants around the corner, or a lower price a few streets inland. I stayed at Hotel La Jungla on the quieter western end of the beachfront, and the location made a small beachfront premium worth paying.
I can speak firsthand about La Jungla. For the other hotels, I compared their locations, facilities and friends’ and guest reviews. I have kept the shortlist tight, focusing on hotels that scored at least around 8.5/10 when I reviewed them, with most close to 9/10 or higher. Ratings can change, so the live listings are worth checking before you book.
Affiliate disclosure: Some hotel links are affiliate links. If you book through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Availability, prices and guest scores change, so I use ratings as a quality filter rather than pretending that a decimal point can tell you which hotel suits you best.
A Few of the Best Hotels in Puerto Villamil to Start With
Stay in Puerto Villamil. I prefer the beach side of town because the quiet and the sound of the waves genuinely added something to my stay. Hotel La Jungla is my personally tested mid-range choice. Cormorant Beach House is the strongest option if you want an exceptionally well-reviewed beachfront position close to the center, while Mi Playa suits travelers looking for something more polished and apartment-like. If you care more about value, Wi-Fi or restaurant access than an ocean view, Puerto Villamil has several excellent options a few blocks inland.

Where to Stay in Puerto Villamil: Beachfront or Center?
Puerto Villamil is small enough to walk around, although it felt surprisingly spread out to me because of its sandy roads and long, low-rise beachfront. The meaningful distinction is between the quieter sections near the beach, the central streets around the main square and restaurants, and accommodation a little farther inland where prices can be better.
Beachfront and quieter western side
This is my first choice. La Jungla was around an 8–10 minute walk from the main square, but being slightly removed from the center gave us quiet evenings, immediate access to the sand and the feeling of being somewhere much wilder than Puerto Ayora.
Central Puerto Villamil
Staying closer to the square puts restaurants, shops and tour offices on your doorstep. It is practical, although the central restaurant streets can be a little livelier at night than the beachfront edge of town.
A few streets inland
Moving inland does not mean isolating yourself. Puerto Villamil is still compact enough that a well-rated guesthouse a few blocks from the beach can be an excellent trade if it saves meaningful money or gives you better Wi-Fi.
Near the ferry pier
Pier proximity alone is a poor reason to choose a hotel. Take a pickup taxi with your luggage and stay where you actually want to spend the next three or four days.

Hotel La Jungla: Simple, Quiet and Exactly Where I Wanted to Be
Hotel La Jungla
We stayed in a corner triple room at Hotel La Jungla, on the quiet western end of Puerto Villamil. I remember paying roughly $70 a night for our stay, with breakfast included in our rate. The room had wide views, hot water and air-conditioning, although we barely needed the AC in September.
What sold me was the setting. The hotel sits right beside the beach at the edge of town, where things already start to feel less built up. Our Starlink connection was good, the walk into the center was manageable, and I loved hearing the ocean at night. I had no meaningful complaint about the stay and would happily book it again.
Check Hotel La Jungla
On Isabela, I think staying near the beach is often worth it.
An ocean view is not worth paying extra for everywhere, but Puerto Villamil is different. Listening to the waves at night was part of what made Isabela feel special to me. If two hotels are otherwise similar and the beachfront option is only moderately more expensive, the beach gets my vote.
This was the Isabela atmosphere I wanted: a long beach, very little development and somewhere I could walk without feeling that every hour needed another organized activity.
Best beachfront all-rounder
Cormorant Beach House

Cormorant solves the main compromise I had at La Jungla: you can stay directly on Puerto Villamil Beach while remaining only around 100 meters from the center. Sea-view rooms, daily breakfast and consistently excellent location reviews make it one of the easiest properties on Isabela to shortlist.
Check Cormorant Beach HouseBest upscale beachfront stay
Mi Playa Galapagos Beachfront Apartments
Mi Playa is the first property on my shortlist for a more upscale stay on Isabela. It is right on the beach, with larger sea-view apartments, kitchenettes and a saltwater pool. That extra space would be particularly useful for a longer stay.

Best quiet boutique apartment
Chez Manany Galapagos Ecolodge

Chez Manany offers a different kind of stay: large apartment-style units with kitchens, terraces and plenty of space, in a quiet position near the pier and Concha de Perla. The review sample is much smaller than at Cormorant or La Jungla, but the feedback is unusually strong.

Hostal Punta Arena
Punta Arena becomes attractive when the saving over a beachfront hotel is substantial. It sits inland but still within easy walking distance of the beach, and current guests rate it very strongly for the price. A shared kitchen also makes it practical for travelers staying several nights.

Best straightforward mid-range hotel
Hotel StarFish

StarFish is a good middle ground if you want a conventional, comfortable hotel rather than a beach apartment or basic hostal. It is close enough to walk to the beach and center easily, while current reviews are particularly strong for cleanliness, comfort and value.
Check Hotel StarFishBest if you want a pool
Galápagos Isabela Hotel Loja
Hotel Loja appeals if you value hotel facilities more than having the beach immediately outside the door. It combines air-conditioned rooms with a garden, breakfast and a pool, while still keeping Puerto Villamil Beach within walking distance.
Check Hotel Loja
One reason I liked staying close to the beach was that wildlife was part of ordinary Puerto Villamil life rather than something you encountered only after joining a tour.
Best budget choice with Starlink
Hostal Janet Starlink

Janet is a particularly useful budget option because it combines a location only steps from the beach with air-conditioning, breakfast, a shared kitchen and Starlink. Verified guest feedback also repeatedly praises the host, which matters in a small guesthouse as much as the room itself.
Check Hostal JanetBest central choice for Wi-Fi
Hotel La Gran Tortuga
La Gran Tortuga trades the beachfront atmosphere for a very practical central position. It advertises Starlink, its current Wi-Fi score is excellent, and guests particularly like the breakfast and staff. It is a sensible choice if you want to be close to everything and need dependable internet.
Check La Gran Tortuga
Best simple central base
Hostal Insular

Insular is uncomplicated in a good way: central Puerto Villamil, roughly 300 meters from the beach, private bathrooms and air-conditioning. Its appeal is location and simplicity rather than hotel facilities.

Wi-Fi on Isabela: “Free Wi-Fi” Does Not Tell You Much
Our internet at La Jungla was through Starlink and worked surprisingly well. That matters because internet on a remote Galápagos island has historically been far less predictable than the Wi-Fi symbol on a booking page suggests. Hostal Janet and La Gran Tortuga explicitly advertise Starlink, and Punta Arena also receives strong connectivity feedback. If you only need WhatsApp this is hardly decisive, but if you need to work or upload photos, check the current setup before booking.
A mistake worth avoiding
Take a Taxi From the Pier If You Have Suitcases
We walked from the ferry pier to La Jungla with rolling suitcases, which sounded reasonable until we started dragging them through Puerto Villamil’s sandy streets. On the return journey we used one of the local pickup taxis instead. It cost only a few dollars and immediately made me wonder why we had bothered walking in the first place.
Choose your hotel for the stay, not for the ten minutes after the ferry.
Two inexpensive pickup-taxi rides make more sense than spending three or four nights in a less appealing location simply to stay near the pier.
The real location decision
Beachfront vs Central Puerto Villamil
If the atmosphere matters
This is still my preference. You get immediate access to Puerto Villamil’s best feature, quieter evenings and the ocean in the background. For couples or anyone coming to Isabela partly to disconnect, I think it is worth considering the premium.
If you want everything close
Central accommodation makes restaurants, tour offices and small shops easier. It is the practical choice if you expect to spend little time at the hotel or simply do not care enough about the beach to pay extra for it.
In practical terms, the difference is modest. From La Jungla we could reach the square in roughly 8–10 minutes, so staying somewhere quieter never made dinner difficult. Puerto Villamil has fewer restaurants than Puerto Ayora, but we still found two places we really liked, including one serving an excellent marinated chicken breast with patacones. I never wished we had traded the quiet beach location for a shorter walk.
Staying on Santa Cruz as well? My Santa Cruz accommodation guide compares Puerto Ayora waterfront, central streets and the highlands.
What I appreciated most about Puerto Villamil was how much quieter it felt than Puerto Ayora. I could spend an evening walking around town without feeling I needed another organized activity.
How long to book
How Many Nights Should You Stay on Isabela?
Possible, but rushed once you factor in arrival, departure and one major excursion.
My sweet spot for Los Túneles, Sierra Negra and actually enjoying Puerto Villamil.
Very good if you want slower days, beach time and weather flexibility.
Best for people deliberately coming to slow down rather than maximize sightseeing.
For most independent travelers, the sweet spot is three or four nights. That is long enough for Isabela to feel like somewhere you stayed rather than somewhere you passed through. Around five nights still makes perfect sense if you enjoy slow travel; beyond that, the decision becomes much more personal.
For the main snorkeling day, my firsthand Los Túneles tour review explains why sea conditions matter when scheduling your stay.
What Matters Most When Choosing an Isabela Hotel
Start with location, then look at air-conditioning, hot water, internet and breakfast before worrying about conventional luxury. The island already supplies the atmosphere. A polished room is nice, but for me a simpler beachfront hotel with reliable basics beats paying more for facilities I barely use.
Cash is also useful. La Jungla currently operates on a cash-only basis, and even where hotels accept cards, arrive on Isabela with enough US dollars for taxis, small restaurants and incidental expenses. Small notes are particularly handy.
If your first choice is full
Compare More Puerto Villamil Hotels
Hotels on Isabela are generally small, which means availability can disappear quickly without the island feeling “sold out” in the conventional resort sense. If your dates are fixed, compare the handful of properties you genuinely like and book one rather than endlessly searching for a theoretically perfect deal.

Where to Stay on Isabela FAQ
What is the best area to stay on Isabela Island?
Stay in Puerto Villamil. I personally prefer the beachfront, particularly the quieter western side, while the streets around the main square are more convenient for restaurants and tour offices.
Is it worth paying more for a beachfront hotel on Isabela?
For me, yes. Staying beside the beach made the setting part of the experience, especially at night when I could hear the waves. If the price difference is moderate, I would pay it again.
Where did you stay on Isabela?
I stayed at Hotel La Jungla in a corner triple room on the quieter beachfront edge of Puerto Villamil. Our stay included breakfast, the Starlink connection worked well, and I would happily stay there again.
What are the best beachfront hotels in Puerto Villamil?
Hotel La Jungla is my personally tested mid-range choice. Cormorant Beach House combines a particularly strong guest score with an excellent central beachfront location, while Mi Playa is better suited to travelers looking for a more upscale apartment-style stay.
Should I stay near the Isabela ferry pier?
Do not choose a hotel mainly for pier proximity. Take a pickup taxi when you have luggage and choose the location you want for the rest of your stay.
Is Puerto Villamil walkable?
Yes. We walked virtually everywhere. The town is more spread out than I expected, but normal daily distances are easy. Rolling suitcases over the sandy roads are another matter.
Which Isabela hotels have good Wi-Fi?
We had a good Starlink connection at La Jungla during our stay. Hostal Janet and La Gran Tortuga also currently advertise Starlink. If internet is important, confirm the system rather than relying only on a generic free-Wi-Fi listing.
How many nights should I stay on Isabela?
Three to four nights is my preferred range. That gives you enough time for major excursions such as Los Túneles and Sierra Negra while still leaving some time to enjoy Puerto Villamil itself.
My conclusion
Where I’d Stay on Isabela Next Time
Next time, the beach is still my starting point. Hotel La Jungla worked extremely well for me because it was simple, quiet and exactly where I wanted to be. For a more central beachfront position, Cormorant Beach House would be high on my shortlist. For a more polished apartment-style stay, Mi Playa is my pick, while Chez Manany appeals if space and privacy matter more than sleeping directly beside the sand.
On a tighter budget, staying inland is an easy compromise. StarFish, Punta Arena, Janet, La Gran Tortuga and Insular all keep you within walking distance of what matters. Puerto Villamil is small enough that there is little reason to over-engineer the decision. Pick a well-reviewed property, take a taxi when you have luggage, and choose the location where you actually want to wake up.
The hotel is only the base. Give Isabela enough nights and places such as Los Túneles, Sierra Negra and Puerto Villamil itself become part of the trip rather than a rushed excursion from Santa Cruz.
Updated November 2026. My comments on Hotel La Jungla come from my own stay. The other recommendations are based on their locations, published facilities and Booking.com guest feedback, not firsthand hotel stays. Ratings, prices, internet connections and payment policies may change, so confirm the details on the live listing before booking.
