Knowing how to get to Zhangjiajie depends on choosing the correct arrival point. Zhangjiajie city, Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, Wulingyuan and the entrances to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are separate locations.
Most high-speed trains arrive at Zhangjiajie West, while flights use Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport near the city center. Travelers visiting the national forest park usually continue to Wulingyuan, the most practical base for the main entrances.
I traveled to Zhangjiajie between my time in Chengdu and Fenghuang and found that the main planning issue was not the long-distance journey, but matching the correct station with the right hotel base and park entrance.

Best Way to Get to Zhangjiajie
The best way to get to Zhangjiajie depends on your starting point. From Changsha, Chongqing, Chengdu, Fenghuang, Guangzhou or Hong Kong, the high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West is usually the most practical option. From Beijing, Shanghai or Xi’an, compare a direct flight with the total rail journey. After arrival, check whether you need to continue to downtown Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan or a specific park entrance.

Several places use the Zhangjiajie name, but they are not in the same location. Check the exact station or destination before booking a train, flight or onward transfer.
Zhangjiajie City / Yongding
What it is: The downtown area containing Zhangjiajie Railway Station, Central Bus Station and the Tianmen Mountain cable-car terminal.
Transport relevance: Local buses and taxis connect the city with the airport, Zhangjiajie West and Wulingyuan.
Zhangjiajie West Railway Station
What it is: The main high-speed railway station, written 张家界西站 in Chinese.
Transport relevance: Most high-speed trains arrive here. It is outside the city center and requires an onward transfer.
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport
What it is: Zhangjiajie’s airport, with the code DYG, located near the city center.
Transport relevance: Passengers continuing outside downtown need a taxi or connecting public transport.
Wulingyuan
What it is: A separate town near Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, around 30–40 kilometers from downtown Zhangjiajie.
Transport relevance: Search specifically for Wulingyuan when arranging onward buses, taxis or hotel transfers.
Zhangjiajie Railway Station
What it is: The older railway station in downtown Zhangjiajie, written 张家界站 in Chinese.
Transport relevance: It mainly serves conventional trains and should not be confused with Zhangjiajie West.
Important: “Zhangjiajie,” “Zhangjiajie West” and “Wulingyuan” are not interchangeable when searching for transport. Always check the full Chinese and English station name before booking.
A hotel advertised as being in “Zhangjiajie” may be in either downtown Zhangjiajie or Wulingyuan. These bases are roughly 40–50 minutes apart, so check the map rather than relying only on the hotel name.

Flying to Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport has the airport code DYG and is located close to downtown Zhangjiajie. It is convenient for Tianmen Mountain, but it is not beside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
A taxi from the airport to downtown usually takes around 15–20 minutes. A direct taxi or DiDi to Wulingyuan or the East Gate normally takes around 40–50 minutes and costs approximately CNY 90–100, depending on traffic and your hotel location.
There is no equally convenient direct public bus from the airport to Wulingyuan. The budget route involves traveling to Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station first and then changing to a tourist coach for Wulingyuan. With luggage, or after an evening flight, a direct taxi is considerably easier.

Zhangjiajie has direct domestic flights from several large Chinese cities, although routes and frequencies vary by season. International connections are more limited and should be checked for your exact travel date rather than assumed to operate year-round.
Flying is most useful from Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an or another distant city. From Changsha and Chongqing, the high-speed train is normally more practical. From Chengdu, compare the 1.5-hour flight with the 4–5.5-hour direct train.
Taking the High-Speed Train to Zhangjiajie West
For most independent travelers already in China, the high-speed train is the best way to reach Zhangjiajie. Modern services arrive at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, shown as 张家界西站 on Chinese maps and tickets.
Do not confuse it with Zhangjiajie Railway Station, 张家界站, the older station near downtown and Tianmen Mountain.
From here, taxis and buses connect directly to both the city center and Wulingyuan. The transfer usually takes around twenty minutes to the city and forty minutes to the national park area.
The official China Railway booking platform is 12306, which has an English-language website and accepts foreign-passport registration. Train tickets are electronic, and foreign travelers normally use the same passport entered during booking to pass the station checks and board.

Third-party platforms such as 12Go can still be useful if you prefer a simpler search interface or want to compare transport options in English. However, 12Go is an intermediary rather than the railway operator, may charge a booking fee and cannot guarantee a seat before China Railway releases the tickets.
Whichever platform you use, enter every passport name and number exactly as printed. Tickets are currently released roughly 15 days before departure, and popular trains can sell out during Chinese public holidays and the summer travel period.

Zhangjiajie West to Wulingyuan
Tourist shuttle buses leave from the Tourism Distribution Center beside Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. The journey to Wulingyuan Bus Station takes around 40 minutes and normally costs approximately CNY 13.
Current published off-season hours are approximately 07:30–16:30, with departures around every 30 minutes. Services may operate later or more frequently in the busiest months, but do not assume there will be an evening bus.
A taxi or DiDi to Wulingyuan takes approximately 30 minutes and generally costs around CNY 60–70. This is the safer option when your train arrives late or you are carrying substantial luggage.
Conventional Trains to Zhangjiajie Railway Station
Zhangjiajie Railway Station, written 张家界站, is the older station near downtown Zhangjiajie. It serves the remaining conventional train routes and should not be confused with Zhangjiajie West.
A conventional sleeper can still make sense when its schedule suits your route or saves a hotel night. Otherwise, high-speed services to Zhangjiajie West are generally faster and offer more useful connections.

Is It Worth Taking a Long-Distance Bus?
Long-distance coaches connect Zhangjiajie with several nearby cities, including Changde and Yichang. However, they are usually slower and less straightforward to book than the high-speed train.
Consider a coach only when the train schedule does not work or when you are starting somewhere without a convenient railway connection. For Changsha, Chongqing, Chengdu, Fenghuang and most larger cities, the train is normally the better option.

Fares and departure times can change. Confirm the final bus departure when you arrive, especially outside peak season.
At Zhangjiajie West, the published Wulingyuan shuttle currently runs only until late afternoon. At the Central Bus Station, buses generally continue until early evening. If you arrive after the last departure, use a licensed taxi or order a DiDi through Alipay.

Getting to Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain is beside downtown Zhangjiajie, not in Wulingyuan. Its main cable-car station is near Zhangjiajie Railway Station and Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station.
This makes Tianmen Mountain practical on an arrival or departure day when you are staying downtown. From Zhangjiajie West, take a taxi or city bus into the centre. From the airport, the downtown cable-car area is only a short taxi ride away.
Do not travel to Wulingyuan first if your plan is to visit Tianmen Mountain immediately. Wulingyuan is approximately 35–45 minutes away by taxi and considerably longer by coach.

Getting to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and its Glass Bridge are separate from both Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The attraction lies east of Wulingyuan and is considerably closer to Wulingyuan than to downtown Zhangjiajie.
From Wulingyuan, allow approximately 30–40 minutes by taxi or local coach. Direct and connecting coaches also operate from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station and Zhangjiajie West, but the journey can take 1.5–2 hours depending on the departure point and waiting time.
Wulingyuan is the shorter transfer point for the Grand Canyon; it is not conveniently located between downtown Zhangjiajie and the national forest park.
Which Route Should You Choose?
- Take the high-speed train from Changsha, Chongqing, Chengdu, Fenghuang, Guangzhou or Hong Kong.
- Compare flights and trains from Beijing, Shanghai and other distant cities.
- Connect through Changsha when no convenient direct service is available.
- Continue to Wulingyuan for the national forest park, or stay downtown for Tianmen Mountain and late arrivals.
- Use a taxi or DiDi after the last bus, as several tourist services stop by late afternoon or early evening.
Final Thoughts
Zhangjiajie is well connected, but a smooth arrival depends on choosing the right transport hub and hotel base. High-speed trains arrive at Zhangjiajie West, flights arrive near downtown, and most forest-park visitors still need a final transfer to Wulingyuan.
For the majority of China itineraries, I would take the high-speed train and continue directly to Wulingyuan. From Beijing or Shanghai, I would compare the total train journey with a direct flight. If arriving after the final shuttle, I would use DiDi rather than adding a complicated bus connection.
