China Airport Transfers: The Easiest Way From Each Airport to the City

Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Zhangjiajie, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, with the train routes worth taking and the pickups that save you a long first evening.

In China, the airport train is often excellent. Getting from the station at the other end to your hotel can be a different story. After traveling independently through the country, I found that having the right airport code, the hotel address in Chinese and a working phone mattered more than memorizing every metro line.

The best China airport transfer depends on the whole journey, not just the train ride out of arrivals. A quick express train is brilliant when the hotel is near its final stop. If it still leaves you changing metro lines and hauling bags down another street, a direct taxi or pickup starts to look more attractive.

The short answer

Traveling light and landing while trains run? Airport rail is my default in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Arriving late, staying away from a rail stop or carrying several bags? Use the official taxi rank, Didi or a prebooked ride. For Zhangjiajie, the deciding detail is whether your hotel is in the city or 40–60 minutes away in Wulingyuan.

Before leaving home, sort out a China eSIM, the apps for maps and Didi and Alipay or WeChat Pay. The first transfer is much easier when your phone works as soon as you land.

Five Minutes of Preparation That Save a Lot of Trouble

The first time I arrived in China, I had far more questions about apps and payments than about the airport itself. The airports are organized; the unfamiliar part is what happens when you need a taxi, a QR code or directions to a hotel whose English name means nothing to the driver.

Have your hotel address in Chinese

Save it as a screenshot along with the phone number. If your data fails, an official taxi driver can still read it.

Set up payments and Didi before flying

Link your card, check the apps and know where your confirmation messages are stored. The pickup zone may be a separate level of the terminal.

Check the airport code

PEK and PKX are not interchangeable, and neither are PVG and SHA. Your hotel transfer booking needs the right terminal and flight number.

Keep a backup if mobile data drops

Offline hotel details, an airport map and some cash are enough to get out of most small arrival snags.

I explain the whole phone setup in my China travel apps guide. For internet access, start with my China eSIM comparison; if you need Google, Gmail or WhatsApp over hotel Wi-Fi or local connections, read my China VPN guide before departure. A travel eSIM does not automatically guarantee access to every blocked service, and routing varies by plan.

PEK versus PKX

Beijing Airport Transfers: Know Which Airport You Are Using

I have arrived through both Beijing airports, and they are very different. Capital Airport sits to the northeast. Daxing is farther south, enormous and impressive inside, but it can leave you with a long final journey if your hotel is around the Forbidden City or the hutongs.

From Capital (PEK): the Airport Express serves Sanyuanqiao, Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao, where you can connect to the city metro. It is a good way to avoid road traffic, though you may still have a walk or one more ride at the end.

From Daxing (PKX): the Daxing Airport Express runs to Caoqiao, in southern Beijing. The express portion is fast; reaching the northern or eastern hotel districts after that can take longer. It is worth plotting the entire route before choosing rail.

For specific ticket prices, connections and the hotel areas that work best from each airport, use my PEK vs Daxing airport-to-city guide. My Beijing metro and Didi guide handles getting around once you are in town.

The striking interior of Beijing Daxing International Airport
Beijing Daxing is spectacular, but its southern location makes the last part of the journey important.

A direct pickup becomes attractive after an overnight flight, with children or when your hotel is several connections away. There is no need to book one just because the airport looks daunting; the rail signs are clear and the trains run efficiently.

PVG versus SHA

Shanghai Airport Transfers: Metro, Maglev and the New Airport Link

Shanghai is unusually well connected for a city of its size. The difficulty is remembering that Pudong and Hongqiao serve different sides of the city. A train that looks incredibly fast on paper is not always the shortest journey once you count the change at the other end.

Pudong Airport (PVG): Three useful rail options

Metro Line 2 is the economical, fairly simple route through Lujiazui, People’s Square and Jing’an. Expect around an hour or more depending on your station. It can be crowded, especially with luggage.

The Maglev gets you from the airport to Longyang Road in roughly eight minutes, but Longyang Road is not the center of Shanghai. You still need another metro ride or taxi. It is great fun if you want to try the train; the practical saving depends on your hotel location. Do not assume every departure runs at the old advertised 430 km/h speed.

The Airport Link Line connects Pudong and Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 in about 40 minutes. It opened in late 2024 and is especially helpful for travelers connecting between the two airports, reaching Hongqiao Railway Station or continuing to eastern-China destinations. It is a different service from the Maglev, and the full airport-to-airport fare has been around ¥26.

Hongqiao Airport (SHA): Usually the easier side of town

Metro Lines 2 and 10 serve Hongqiao. There is also excellent access to Hongqiao Railway Station, making this the convenient arrival point for onward trips to Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing. Leave time to walk between the airport terminal and station; they belong to the same transport hub but are not the same platform.

If your hotel is on a useful metro line and you land during the day, there is little reason to pay for a transfer. A car makes more sense after a late international arrival at Pudong or for accommodation with an awkward final leg.

DYG · a different sort of arrival

Zhangjiajie Airport: City Hotel or Wulingyuan?

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport is much smaller than Beijing or Shanghai. Downtown Zhangjiajie and the Tianmen Mountain cableway are nearby, so a taxi or Didi is usually simple and inexpensive. There is also an airport shuttle into the city; check its current pickup point and departure arrangements after landing.

The journey changes if your hotel is in Wulingyuan, the gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. That is roughly 35 kilometers from the airport, typically 40–60 minutes by car. You can piece together buses, but after a flight it is easier to go directly to your accommodation, particularly after dark.

Check the booked transfer’s actual drop-off district. “Zhangjiajie hotel” can mean somewhere near Tianmen Mountain in the city or accommodation near the forest park’s East Gate in Wulingyuan; getting those mixed up is an expensive detour.

XIY · Xianyang International

Xi’an Airport to the Bell Tower and City Walls

Xi’an airport is outside the historic city, but the metro route is manageable. Line 14 links the airport with Xi’an North Railway Station, where Line 2 continues toward the walled center. The journey to the Bell Tower area usually takes around 70–90 minutes including the change.

The airport has expanded, including newer terminal facilities, so follow the signs for the metro station serving your terminal rather than memorizing one old exit number. Airport coaches can be useful when their stops are closer to your hotel than the metro. A taxi or Didi typically takes around an hour to the old center, with the usual traffic variation.

After a long flight, the final stretch across the old city can feel longer than expected if your luggage has to go through an MRT interchange and then along busy sidewalks. That is when the direct car option earns its place.

CTU versus TFU

Chengdu Airport Transfers: Shuangliu and Tianfu Are Not Alike

Chengdu has two airports, and the three-letter code matters here as much as it does in Beijing. Shuangliu (CTU) is relatively close to the city. Tianfu (TFU) is much farther out to the southeast, so reaching your hotel can become a substantial final journey.

From Shuangliu (CTU): Metro Line 10 serves the airport; change at Taipingyuan or another suitable interchange for your hotel. The ride into central Chengdu takes longer than the short Line 10 airport segment, but public transport is usually the sensible option.

From Tianfu (TFU): Metro Line 18 is the main rail route toward Chengdu South Railway Station. Express trains can cover the airport-to-south-station part in roughly 30–35 minutes, while stopping services take longer. Allow extra time to reach a hotel around Tianfu Square, Wenshu Monastery or Kuanzhai Alley. Airport buses and taxis are alternatives, including outside metro hours.

For a solo traveler with a small bag, Line 18 can be excellent value. For a group, a late arrival or somewhere well beyond Chengdu South, the longer door-to-door ride makes a prebooked car easier to justify.

CAN · Baiyun International

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport: The Metro Usually Wins

Baiyun Airport is a large arrival hub, but the metro makes things manageable. Line 3 links the airport with the city’s subway system. If your hotel is near a convenient stop in Tianhe or Yuexiu, this is often quicker and cheaper than driving through Guangzhou traffic.

The city spreads out. That matters most when your hotel is not near the metro, you land late or you have heavy luggage. A taxi or a car booked ahead gets rid of the extra transfer at the end. Confirm which airport terminal you arrive at, because the pickup instructions vary.

SZX · Bao’an International

Shenzhen Airport: Fast Metro, Long City Distances

Shenzhen Bao’an Airport is served by Metro Line 11. It runs toward Nanshan and Futian and is one of the simpler rail arrivals on this list. Getting to a hotel close to the line can be easier than sitting in road traffic.

The problem is that Shenzhen is very large. Hotels in eastern districts or beyond a simple Line 11 connection can still leave you with a lengthy ride. If you plan to cross into Hong Kong afterward, check the border crossing you need before choosing a car or train. Different crossings have different onward transport.

HKG · a separate transport system

Hong Kong Airport: Take the Airport Express Unless a Car Really Helps

Hong Kong International Airport is the easiest rail arrival here for many travelers. The Airport Express reaches Kowloon in around 22 minutes and Hong Kong Station in around 24. It is built for travelers with luggage and connects into the wider MTR system.

The train does not take everyone straight to the hotel, of course. If you are staying far from the Airport Express stops, a bus, taxi or the MTR connection can be better. Buses reach more neighborhoods directly and often cost less, although they take longer.

For a family, a group with several big cases or a hotel that would require another taxi from the train, a prebooked vehicle is convenient. Otherwise, I would keep the money and take the Express.

Pay for the part that is difficult

When a Private Transfer Is Worth the Money

China has no shortage of affordable public transport. I used it constantly, and at several of these airports a train makes far more sense than a private car. Paying for a driver is a practical choice, not an automatic upgrade.

Take airport rail

You land during operating hours, travel light and have a hotel close to the next metro station. This is often the fastest and least expensive approach.

Use the official taxi rank or Didi

You have working data, a saved Chinese address and want a direct ride without paying for meet-and-greet service.

Book a pickup

You land near midnight, have several bags or are traveling as a family, especially if your hotel is a long way from the airport rail terminus.

Check more carefully

Your flight is delayed, you have a tight layover or you need to cross airports. Confirm flight tracking, waiting-time policy and the actual airport in the booking details.

One simple rule avoids most misunderstandings: check the ride to the hotel door. “Twenty minutes to the city” is meaningless when the airport train leaves you another 40 minutes and two staircases away from the room.

Ready for the first day

Phone, Payments and Onward Travel

Before my China trips, I make sure I can use maps, show an address in Chinese and pay for a taxi or metro ticket without having to solve everything at arrivals.

Not every international travel eSIM routes data the same way, and VPN access can change. Check the plan and test your setup before departure instead of relying on an old screenshot.

Common questions

China Airport Transfer FAQ

Can I use Didi from airports in China?

Often, yes. Most major airports have designated ride-hailing pickup zones, which may be a different level from the taxi rank. Set up the app and payment before arriving, and follow the pickup instructions rather than waiting outside any exit.

Should I book an airport transfer before arriving in China?

Not automatically. Rail is excellent at many large airports. Prebooking makes more sense for a late flight, heavy bags, children or a hotel far from the airport rail route.

What if I land after the last metro or airport train?

Use an official taxi, a ride booked through Didi or a private pickup arranged in advance. Airport bus services may still operate, but their routes and hours vary. Check the last rail service on the day you travel.

Which Beijing airport is better for the city center?

Beijing Capital (PEK) is generally the easier airport for many central and northeastern hotel areas. Daxing (PKX) is farther south but has a fast airport express; the right answer depends on the hotel and flight.

How do I travel between Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports?

The Shanghai Airport Link Line connects Pudong and Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 in roughly 40 minutes, with additional walking and terminal access time. That is usually better than crossing the city by taxi in heavy traffic.

Is the Shanghai Maglev worth taking?

It is a fun and very fast ride to Longyang Road. For a hotel elsewhere in Shanghai, include the metro or taxi transfer after Longyang Road before deciding whether it saves time.

How do I get to Wulingyuan from Zhangjiajie Airport?

A taxi or prebooked car takes roughly 40–60 minutes to Wulingyuan, depending on your accommodation. Downtown Zhangjiajie is much closer, so confirm which hotel district is on your booking.

Do I need a Chinese phone number to get to the hotel?

Not necessarily. A data eSIM can keep maps, messages and many ride-hailing functions working, although a particular app or service may request a phone number for verification. Set up accounts before departure and keep your hotel details offline.

Does a China eSIM work in Hong Kong?

Only if Hong Kong is included in that particular plan. Many plans list mainland China and Hong Kong separately, so check the countries before buying.
