If you specifically need local calls or SMS, look for a tourist product that explicitly includes a real 010 number. This is the distinction I think matters most, because a surprising number of Korea eSIM pages blur all three together.
- Mobile data: Maps, browsing, translation, messaging and train planning. A normal travel eSIM handles this.
- 010 number + calls/SMS: A Korean mobile number can receive local calls or texts when the tourist product supports them and the required verification is complete.
- Korean identity verification: Resident-style 본인인증 is a separate system. A tourist 010 number does not automatically give you access to banking, government or other resident-level verification.
Why fewer tourists need 010 in 2026
Some services that once pushed foreign visitors toward a Korean phone number now offer other verification routes. Naver, for example, introduced passport-based verification for foreign visitors in June 2026.
So I would only buy a 010-number product when a specific use case requires local calls, SMS or a Korean mobile number.

If your trip is mostly normal sightseeing and city-to-city travel, a local number is usually solving a problem you may never encounter. I would rather install the data eSIM before departure and arrive connected.
If you are staying longer, dealing with Korean contacts, expecting local calls, or know a specific service needs SMS to a Korean number, then the 010 product becomes worth the extra setup.

KT: 010 Tourist Plans With Verification Steps
KT’s tourist products are another legitimate route to a Korean 010 number. The important part is not simply that the number starts with 010; it is whether your exact plan supports the calls and SMS you need and what must be verified after arrival.
For some voice/SMS functions, KT may require identity or entry verification at a roaming center. That makes it less frictionless than installing a data-only travel eSIM at home, but that extra friction is exactly why I only recommend the local-number route when you know you need it.
LG U+: 010 Number Without Pretending It Solves Identity Verification
LG U+ separates data-only and Data + Voice products, which makes the decision easier to understand. If you want a Korean number, look specifically at the qualifying voice/SMS product rather than assuming every LG U+ tourist eSIM has the same features.
The useful distinction is what LG U+ says about verification: voice/SMS services can support SMS verification for some restaurant and taxi reservation apps, while banking and government identity verification are not supported. If You Do Not Need a Korean Number
Then stop solving the 010 problem and use a normal data eSIM.
