The town is the island’s practical center and the base I would choose for most first visits. The advantage is not that it saves huge amounts of driving — nothing on Elafonissos is very far away — but that the hours before and after the beach are effortless.
You can walk to bakeries and cafés in the morning, come back from the beach without planning another journey for dinner, and stay close to the ferry on arrival and departure days. That makes a bigger difference on a short trip than shaving a few minutes off the drive to Simos.
