e& vs du for Tourists in the UAE: Which Is Better for SIMs, eSIMs, and Airport Arrival?
If you are comparing Etisalat vs du for a trip to the UAE, both networks are good enough that the decision is less dramatic than many comparison guides make it sound. The useful differences are elsewhere: how quickly you can get connected after landing, whether you need a UAE phone number, what happens after the free first-day data ends, and whether normal calling minutes matter.
e& — the network most travelers still know as Etisalat — currently has the stronger independent national network results and a very smooth visitor eSIM setup. du counters with an excellent tourist product of its own, including free first-day data and unusually clear bundles with calling minutes.
This guide stays focused on e& vs du as local UAE tourist operators. If you only want a data-only eSIM installed before departure, use my separate best eSIM for the UAE guide instead.

e& or du for tourists?
Choose e& if network coverage and the smoothest official arrival setup matter most. Choose du if you want the clearest tourist bundles, particularly if you expect to make ordinary local or international calls.
Both currently offer tourists around 10GB of free first-day data, so that part of the comparison is effectively a tie.

e& vs du for tourists at a glance
For a visitor, these differences matter far more than resident plans or generic claims that one brand is simply “better.”
| What matters | e& / Etisalat | du | My take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free arrival offer | 10GB for one day on its Free Visitor Line eSIM | 10GB for 24 hours on its free Tourist eSIM | Tie |
| Digital activation | QR code + facial recognition after immigration | Digital Tourist eSIM activation | e& has the cleaner arrival flow |
| National network results | Currently stronger across most independent network measurements | Still excellent in the main tourist areas | e& |
| Calling minutes | Visitor Lines include voice options and Flexi minutes | Very clearly stated local + international allowances | du is easier to compare |
| Dubai / Abu Dhabi city trip | Excellent | Excellent | Either |
| Road trips / more remote areas | Stronger current coverage evidence | Good, but e& leads nationally | e& |
They are the same operator for the purpose of this comparison. The consumer brand is now e&, but “Etisalat vs du” remains the phrase many travelers still search.

Which is easier when you arrive?
This is where e& stands out. Its Free Visitor Line eSIM was designed specifically for arrivals: after immigration, you scan a QR code, complete facial recognition and activate the line without needing to queue at a telecom desk. It comes with 10GB valid for one day.
du’s offer is hardly inconvenient. Its free Tourist eSIM also currently includes 10GB for 24 hours and can be activated digitally. The main difference is that e&’s system feels particularly built around that immediate post-immigration moment.
For a one-day UAE stopover, either free offer can potentially be enough on its own. For a longer stay, what matters is the plan you move onto afterwards.
I give e& a small edge for pure arrival convenience. The free data itself is basically a draw.

Which has better coverage: e& or du?
e& currently has the stronger independent network case. In Opensignal’s March 2026 UAE report it won 12 of 13 awards, including Coverage Experience, 5G Coverage Experience, Reliability Experience and Consistent Quality.
du won Time on Network, but the difference there was tiny: roughly 99.3% for du versus 99.0% for e&. In other words, both networks are available almost all the time in normal use.
I would therefore not turn this into “e& works in Dubai and du does not” — that would be nonsense. In central Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and along the main highways, both are highly usable.
The e& advantage is more relevant if you plan to drive widely around the country, particularly toward mountain, desert or less built-up areas.

Which has better tourist bundles and calling minutes?
du makes this particularly easy to understand. Its current unlimited tourist bundles advertise:
| du tourist plan | Data | Local + international minutes |
|---|---|---|
| AED 199 · 7 days | Unlimited | 100 minutes |
| AED 299 · 14 days | Unlimited | 200 minutes |
| AED 499 · 28 days | Unlimited | 400 minutes |
e& also sells dedicated Visitor Lines — currently advertised from AED 49 — with data and voice options, and its Flexi minutes cover local calls plus many international destinations.
But du’s tourist pricing is easier to understand at a glance. If I knew I would regularly call hotels, drivers, restaurants or UAE businesses, that clarity would matter to me.
Current offers can change, so check the current du tourist plans and current e& Visitor Lines shortly before travelling.

What about Dubai vs Abu Dhabi?
For a conventional Dubai itinerary — DXB, Downtown, Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, malls and mainstream excursions — I would happily use either operator.
The same applies around central Abu Dhabi, Yas Island and Saadiyat. e& has the stronger national measurements overall, but du is not some second-rate urban network.
For these city trips, choose according to activation and bundle structure: e& for its arrival flow and broader network edge; du if its tourist packages and included calling minutes suit you better.

When should you skip both e& and du?
A local UAE tourist line makes sense when you want a UAE phone number, conventional calling minutes or one of the local operators’ arrival offers.
If you only need data for maps, Careem, Uber, messaging, reservations and tickets, you do not necessarily need a local line at all. That is where a travel eSIM becomes the more relevant comparison.
I deliberately keep that research in my Best eSIM for the UAE in 2026 guide , so this page does not turn into a second Nomad-vs-Saily-vs-Airalo article.

If you do not need a UAE number, Nomad is the data-only alternative I currently recommend most often for a normal UAE trip. Its UAE plans use the du network.

Which would I choose?
If I wanted a local UAE line, I would choose e& for the smoothest arrival experience and the stronger overall network evidence.
I would choose du if I specifically wanted one of its tourist bundles with clearly stated calling minutes. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi themselves, I would not worry much about choosing the “wrong” network.
And if I realised I did not need a UAE number in the first place, I would stop comparing e& and du altogether and switch to the UAE travel eSIM comparison .
e& vs du for tourists: FAQ
Is e& the same as Etisalat?
Yes. e& is the current brand, while Etisalat is the older name many travelers still recognise and search for.
Which has better coverage, e& or du?
e& currently has the stronger independent national results. Opensignal’s March 2026 UAE report gave it 12 of 13 awards, including geographic coverage and reliability categories. Both networks remain very strong in the main cities.
Can tourists get free data in the UAE?
Yes. e&’s Free Visitor Line eSIM and du’s free Tourist eSIM are both currently built around 10GB of complimentary data valid for roughly the first 24 hours.
Which is better at Dubai Airport?
Both are tourist-friendly. I give e& a small edge because its self-activated Visitor Line eSIM was specifically designed to work after immigration without requiring a normal counter transaction.
Which is better for calling?
du is particularly easy to compare because its current tourist unlimited bundles clearly state the number of included local and international minutes.
Is du good enough outside Dubai?
Yes. du is a nationwide UAE operator, not merely a Dubai network. e& currently has stronger independent geographic coverage results, so I would lean that way for a more extensive UAE road trip.
Should I buy a local tourist SIM or a travel eSIM?
Choose e& or du if you want a UAE number and conventional calling. If you simply want mobile data installed before travel, compare the options in my UAE eSIM guide .
