Alishan Itinerary: How to Plan 1 or 2 Days in Taiwan’s Most Famous Mountain Region
This Alishan itinerary is based on my own time in the region, when heavy rain pushed us toward local tea, specialty coffee and a Tsou-hosted stay before we explored the forest and railway the following day. Alishan becomes much easier to plan once you understand that its tea-growing villages and high forest recreation area are different parts of the same mountain region. For most first-time visitors, I recommend 2 days and 1 night; one day works if you focus on the forest and skip sunrise.
Updated October 2026 with current Forest Railway, bus and recreation-area information.

How many days do you need in Alishan?
Two days and one night is the sweet spot. That gives you time for the forest, an overnight near the recreation area, a sunrise attempt and the scenic journey in or out.
Add a second night if tea country, Tsou culture, photography or a slower mountain stay matter as much as the classic forest and sunrise.
The Forest Railway goes all the way from Chiayi to Alishan again
A surprising amount of older Alishan advice still says the historic railway ends at Fenqihu and that passengers must continue to Alishan by bus.
That is outdated. The restored Chiayi–Alishan main line is operating again, including a daily through service between Chiayi and Alishan.
| Through train | Departure | Fenqihu | Arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alishan Express No. 5 uphill | Chiayi 10:00 | 12:16–13:21 | Alishan 14:56 |
| Alishan Express No. 8 downhill | Alishan 11:50 | 13:29 | Chiayi 15:45 |
The long stop in Fenqihu on the uphill train gives you time to walk around the railway village and have lunch before continuing into the high forest.
Check the official Forest Railway timetable shortly before traveling because times can change.
The standard admission fee to Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is higher than the public-transport rate. Travelers arriving on qualifying public buses can receive the reduced admission price, so keep your ticket until you enter.
Alishan is a mountain region, not one single attraction
When people say “Alishan,” they may mean the broad mountain region or specifically Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. Those are not interchangeable.
| Area | What you find there | Best reason to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Alishan National Forest Recreation Area | Zhushan sunrise, giant trees, Sister Ponds, Shouzhen Temple and branch railways | Best for the classic Alishan experience |
| Shizhuo / Leye | Tea plantations, tea trails, coffee estates, Tsou communities and mountain views | Best for tea, coffee and a slower stay |
| Fenqihu | Historic railway village, old street and railway lunchboxes | Best as a train and lunch stop |

The forest recreation area sits above roughly 2,000 m (6,560 ft). Shizhuo lies lower on Highway 18 and has a more agricultural feel, centered on tea, coffee and smaller mountain communities.

Why Alishan is worth visiting
What makes Alishan memorable is the change of atmosphere. After Taiwan’s cities and coast, the cooler air, winding mountain roads and huge cypress forest feel like a reset.
The railway gives the mountains a sense of history, while the lower slopes add tea, specialty coffee and Tsou culture. Once those pieces connect, Alishan becomes much more interesting than a place where everyone wakes up before dawn for the same photograph.

Alishan 1-day itinerary
With one day, focus on Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. Trying to combine the tea villages, Fenqihu, sunrise and the entire forest in a single day creates exactly the kind of rushed Alishan visit I would avoid.
Alishan Station → Zhaoping
Take the short Zhaoping branch railway if it matches your arrival time. From there, continue on foot into the forest.
Sister Ponds
Follow the forest paths toward Sister Ponds. The routes here are developed and accessible enough that you do not need to be a serious hiker.
Shouzhen Temple
Continue toward Shouzhen Temple, where the small collection of food stalls provides an easy break before the giant-tree section.
Giant Tree Plank Trail → Shenmu
Walk through the old Taiwan red cypress forest toward Shenmu, then return by branch train or continue on foot.

You normally lose the classic sunrise experience and have almost no weather buffer. If Alishan is one of your major Taiwan priorities, stay overnight.
When an organized Alishan day trip makes sense
Alishan Forest Day Trip from Taichung, Kaohsiung or Chiayi
If you only have one day, the main advantage is logistical. You avoid coordinating mountain buses, arrival times and the return journey yourself and can spend the available hours inside Alishan instead.
I would particularly consider this from Taichung or Kaohsiung, where an independent same-day trip involves more moving parts.

Alishan 2-day itinerary: tea country, forest and sunrise
Two days and one night gives Alishan enough room to feel like a mountain stay rather than a transport exercise.
Day 1: tea, coffee and the lower Alishan region
We arrived in pouring rain — real mountain rain rather than photogenic mist. That immediately changed our plans, but it also pushed us toward two experiences that gave the landscape far more context: coffee and tea.

Our first stop was Zouzhouyuan Specialty Coffee, also known as Zou Coffee. It was expensive, but the quality justified the stop. Sitting with locally grown coffee while the rain hammered down outside also made Alishan feel much more like an agricultural region than a sightseeing zone.
From there, we visited Chu Chen Handmade Tea. What could have been a quick purchase became a private tasting, with explanations of growing conditions, harvests, processing and how those differences affect the tea.

If the weather allows, Shizhuo also has a network of short walks through tea plantations, bamboo and forest. You can choose one or two sections rather than trying to complete everything.
Staying with a Tsou host
We stayed in locally owned accommodation run by a woman from the Tsou community, one of Taiwan’s officially recognized Indigenous peoples whose homeland includes the Alishan region.
She was involved in local community life and in efforts to preserve the Tsou language among younger generations. That made the stay feel connected to the region in a way that a purely scenic mountain hotel could not.

If you arrive by public transport: use the through Forest Railway
The restored direct train creates a very different but equally good Day 1. Reach Chiayi Railway Station before the morning departure, ride the historic line into the mountains, use the long Fenqihu stop for lunch and continue to Alishan.

Day 2: sunrise and the forest
Wake before dawn if the forecast is promising and head toward Zhushan. After sunrise, return for breakfast and use the rest of the morning for the forest.

My preferred walking sequence is:
Zhaoping → Sister Ponds → Shouzhen Temple → Giant Tree Plank Trail → Shenmu.

The pleasure of walking here is gradual rather than dramatic: wet timber, moss, filtered light, old railway infrastructure and paths disappearing deeper into the forest.

How the Zhushan sunrise train works
The Zhushan Line is the famous sunrise branch railway, but there is no single departure time that remains valid throughout the year.
Departure changes according to sunrise time and is announced the previous afternoon. Check the official railway information after you arrive rather than relying on an old screenshot or blog timetable.

Cloud, rain or fog can hide the horizon completely. The forest, railway, tea country and mountain atmosphere are strong enough that I would still visit with an uncertain forecast.
If your preferred train sells out, walking toward the sunrise viewpoints is an alternative for travelers comfortable with an early uphill walk. Sunrise buses also operate within the recreation area.
Check the official branch-line information before setting your alarm.
Alishan Forest Railway: tickets, routes and booking strategy
The railway becomes much easier once you distinguish the main line from Chiayi from the short branch lines inside Alishan.
Main line
Chiayi → Beimen → Zhuqi → Jiaoliping → Fenqihu → Alishan. The full route is operating again.
Zhushan Line
The classic sunrise railway. Departure changes according to sunrise time.
Zhaoping Line
Useful at the beginning of the classic forest walk before Sister Ponds.
Shenmu Line
Useful after the Giant Tree area if you do not want to retrace the whole walking route.
Booking window
Main-line reservations normally open within a limited advance-booking window, with special rules possible around holidays.
My strategy
Reserve the long Chiayi–Alishan journey first. Inside the park, use branch trains selectively to complement the forest walks.
How to get to Alishan
1. HSR to Chiayi + direct bus
From Taipei, take Taiwan High Speed Rail south to Chiayi HSR Station. Direct Taiwan Tourist Shuttle services connect the HSR station with Alishan, so you do not necessarily need to travel into central Chiayi first.

2. Chiayi → Alishan by Forest Railway
Choose this if the historic railway is part of the reason you are visiting.
The Forest Railway leaves from Chiayi Railway Station, not Chiayi HSR. If you arrive by high-speed rail, allow enough time to transfer into central Chiayi first.
3. Rental car
Driving is the most flexible choice if you want to stop at Shizhuo, Leye, tea plantations, coffee farms and roadside viewpoints.
It also makes an onward route toward Sun Moon Lake much easier.
Compare rental cars in Taiwan
A rental car makes the biggest difference when Alishan is part of a wider central-Taiwan route rather than an isolated forest visit.
Compare Taiwan car rentalsMy broader guide to getting around Taiwan compares the HSR, TRA, buses and rental-car situations I encountered around the island.
Alishan to Sun Moon Lake
We left Alishan toward Sun Moon Lake, and the mountain road became one of the most scenic transfer days of the trip.
Instead of dropping back toward the western lowlands immediately, the route continues through the central mountains and makes Alishan feel like part of a continuous Taiwan journey.

Public transport between Alishan and Sun Moon Lake also exists, but departures are limited enough that I would reserve in advance and reconfirm the current timetable.
Mountain road conditions can change after heavy rain, storms or maintenance, so always check before relying on an onward road connection.
Combine Alishan and Sun Moon Lake on a private trip
From Taipei City: 3-Day Sun Moon Lake & Alishan Private Tour
This makes much more sense than trying to visit Alishan from Taipei as a frantic day trip.
It links two of central Taiwan’s major mountain destinations while removing the awkward transport and luggage transfers between them.

Where to stay in Alishan
Inside or beside the forest recreation area
This is the practical choice if sunrise is important. You can reach Alishan Station before dawn without another mountain transfer and spend the following morning directly on the forest trails.
Shizhuo or Leye
Stay lower if tea, coffee, small guesthouses and a more local mountain environment matter more. The trade-off is that Zhushan sunrise becomes much less convenient.
Fenqihu
Fenqihu is atmospheric and worth stopping in, particularly on the Forest Railway, but I would not make it my only base if sunrise in the main recreation area is a priority.
If sunrise matters most, sleep at the top. If tea, coffee and the lower mountain region interest you more, Shizhuo or Leye can provide the richer stay.
I compare these areas in much more detail — including which base works best for sunrise, tea country, Fenqihu and Chiayi, plus the hotels I would actually shortlist — in my guide to where to stay in Alishan .
What to do when Alishan disappears into fog
We arrived in serious rain, and my first reaction was that the mountain part of the trip had gone wrong.
In practice, the bad weather pushed us toward tea, coffee and conversations indoors. Those ended up adding more depth to the visit than another viewpoint would have.

Best time to visit Alishan
- Spring: cherry blossoms, beautiful scenery and some of the heaviest demand.
- Summer: intensely green but wetter and more prone to cloud and rain.
- Fall: comfortable walking conditions and often more stable weather.
- Winter: colder mornings and generally favorable conditions for the famous sea of clouds.
Alishan FAQ
How many days do you need in Alishan?
For most first-time visitors, I recommend two days and one night. That gives you enough time for the forest, an overnight near the recreation area and a sunrise attempt without making the whole visit feel rushed.
Can you visit Alishan in one day?
Yes. With one day, focus on Alishan National Forest Recreation Area and skip trying to combine tea country, Fenqihu and sunrise as well.
Is the Alishan Forest Railway running from Chiayi to Alishan?
Yes. The full Chiayi–Alishan main line is operating again, so older information saying that trains terminate at Fenqihu is outdated. Check the official railway timetable shortly before travel because schedules can change.
Is Alishan sunrise worth it?
It can be spectacular, but weather is unpredictable. I treat sunrise as a bonus rather than the only reason to visit because the forest, railway, tea region and mountain atmosphere are worthwhile even when cloud blocks the horizon.
Where should you stay in Alishan?
If sunrise and forest access are your priorities, stay inside or beside the main recreation area. For tea plantations, coffee and a more local mountain stay, Shizhuo or Leye can be a better choice. See my complete guide to where to stay in Alishan for specific areas and hotel recommendations.
Can you reach Alishan without a car?
Yes. You can use the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi or direct Taiwan Tourist Shuttle buses. A car becomes more useful if you want to explore Shizhuo, Leye, tea plantations, coffee farms and viewpoints independently.
