AIS is the network I trust first for most Thailand island trips. Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Lipe all have usable AIS coverage in the main traveler areas.
It is not perfect everywhere, especially around hills, smaller bays and boat routes, but AIS stays usable in the widest range of places. It also tends to reconnect quickly after patchy stretches, which matters when you are moving between beaches, viewpoints and ferry ports.
DTAC: strong on Samui and Phangan
DTAC deserves more credit on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Around the main beaches and coastal areas, many travelers will find it perfectly usable.
It is less consistent once you move beyond those islands. DTAC can work on Koh Tao and parts of Phuket, but it is weaker on Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and some longtail boat routes. I see it as a good option for Samui and Phangan-focused trips, not the best default for wider island hopping.
TrueMove: good in Phuket and Phi Phi’s main areas

The problem is consistency. TrueMove can be fast in one bay and weaker in the next, especially once you leave the busiest zones. It is fine for a Phuket-focused trip, but I would not use it as my first choice for a route with several islands.

Island‑by‑Island Performance
Our team tested Thailand island coverage the way I use mobile data when I travel: checking maps between beaches, looking up ferry details, messaging hotels, loading restaurant pins, using data around piers and seeing how quickly the phone reconnected after weaker stretches. The main beach towns were rarely the problem. The gaps showed up when I moved around: scooter roads, viewpoints, quieter coves, ferry areas and longtail boat routes.
Phuket
Phuket was the easiest island for mobile data. I had the least trouble here because the main traveler areas are well covered and the island has much more infrastructure than the smaller islands.
Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai and Bang Tao were all straightforward for normal use. AIS, DTAC and TrueMove all work in the main resort areas, so if you are only staying in Phuket and moving between busy beaches, you have more flexibility.
We noticed the difference more when leaving the main strips. AIS felt more consistent on coastal roads and quieter beach areas. DTAC was fine in many places but less steady around hillier stretches. TrueMove could be fast in the busy zones, but it felt more location-dependent once I moved away from them.
For Phuket only, any of the three can work. For Phuket plus Phi Phi, Koh Lanta or smaller islands, I start with AIS.
Koh Samui
Samui was also easy compared with smaller islands. The ring road helps a lot because most traveler movement stays near the coast, and places like Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut and Maenam are well covered.
DTAC performed better here than many people expect. Around the main beach areas, the difference between AIS and DTAC was not dramatic for normal travel use. AIS still felt like the more consistent all-round option, especially when moving away from the main coastal areas.
TrueMove was usable, but I would not make it my first choice for Samui unless the plan was clearly better value and I was staying mostly in the main areas.
Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan felt less predictable than Samui. Around Thong Sala, Baan Tai, Haad Rin and the main west coast beaches, AIS and DTAC were both fine for maps, messages and browsing.
The signal became more uneven when moving between beaches and through hillier parts of the island. That is where AIS had the edge for me. It was not about huge speed differences. It was about getting back online faster after weaker stretches.
DTAC is good for a simple Samui and Phangan trip. TrueMove is not the network I would prioritize here if you plan to explore beyond the busiest areas.
Koh Tao
Koh Tao is small, but it is not always easy for mobile data because of the hills. Around Sairee Beach and Mae Haad, AIS and DTAC were good enough for normal use.
The weaker spots appeared around viewpoints, inland roads and smaller bays. If you are diving, moving around by scooter or relying on maps between beaches, AIS is the better starting point. DTAC is fine if you stay mostly near the main areas. TrueMove would not be my first choice for Koh Tao.
Phi Phi
Phi Phi was very clear: the main area is fine, the boat routes are not. Around Tonsai and Loh Dalum, AIS and TrueMove worked well enough for normal travel use. DTAC was less convincing.
Once we were on longtail routes, the signal became much less dependable. Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island are exactly the kinds of places where you should not assume mobile data will work. Save tickets, meeting points and offline maps before leaving the main area.
AIS is the better overall option for Phi Phi, especially if you are not only staying in the central beach area.
Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta felt more spread out than the busier islands, and that affects coverage. The west coast beach areas were generally fine, but the island becomes more variable as you move south or inland.
AIS was clearly the easiest network to trust here. It worked best for the kind of things I cared about on Lanta: scooter navigation, restaurant searches, beach hopping and checking details while moving between different parts of the island.
DTAC was usable but less consistent. TrueMove was the weakest option. For Koh Lanta, I would not overcomplicate it: use an AIS-based eSIM.
Koh Chang
Koh Chang worked best on the west coast. Around White Sand Beach, Klong Prao and Lonely Beach, mobile data was fine for normal travel use.
AIS was the most reliable option for moving between the main west coast areas. DTAC worked in the busier parts, but I would not rely on it as much if exploring more widely. TrueMove was weaker.
The east coast is quieter and less developed, so I would expect more gaps there no matter which eSIM you use.
Koh Kood
Koh Kood was one of the clearest cases where network choice matters. It is quieter, more spread out and less built up, so the signal drops faster once you leave the main beach zones.
AIS was the best option, but even AIS was not perfect everywhere. That is important to say clearly. On Koh Kood, I would not think in terms of constant fast data. I would think in terms of getting enough connection for maps, messages and reconnection after weaker stretches.
DTAC and TrueMove are weaker choices here. If you explore by scooter, keep offline maps ready.
Koh Mak
Koh Mak was easier than Koh Kood. Around the main beach areas, AIS worked well and DTAC was usable for basic travel needs.
I would still choose AIS because Koh Mak is often part of a wider Koh Chang and Koh Kood route. It is better to choose for the whole island-hopping route than for Koh Mak alone.
Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe depends heavily on where you are. Around Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach, AIS was the best option for normal use.
The moment you move onto longtail routes toward Koh Adang, Koh Rawi or smaller nearby islands, you should expect weak signal or no signal. DTAC can work in some areas, but it is less consistent. TrueMove is limited.
