Best Mobile Network in India for Travelers (2026): Airtel vs. Jio vs. Vi
I spent three months in India, based in Mumbai and traveling around the country, with Airtel as my main network. It worked well for maps, trains, ride apps, bookings and everyday travel. If you are comparing Airtel vs Jio vs Vi to find the best mobile network in India, Jio currently leads the national data—but India is far too large and varied for one nationwide ranking to tell the whole story.
What I tested: Airtel was my day-to-day connection, not something I switched on for a few speed tests. I relied on it for navigation, train and flight logistics, Uber/Ola, WhatsApp, restaurant searches and hotel communication while moving around India.
I was not trying to benchmark every Indian carrier myself. For Jio, Vi and the nationwide comparison, I use current independent measurements and keep those separate from my firsthand Airtel experience.
Jio Leads the Data; Airtel Worked Well for Me
Jio has the strongest national numbers in 2026, Airtel remains the closest all-round alternative, and Vi is becoming much more competitive where its newer 5G network is available.

The eSIM brand is only part of the story; the Indian carrier underneath it matters more once you start moving around.
Nomad India
Nomad currently lists Airtel for India. Since Airtel is the network I relied on during my own stay, this is the travel eSIM option that makes the most immediate sense to me.

- Install before departure instead of arranging a local SIM after landing.
- A practical choice for mainstream multi-city travel.
Airalo India
Airalo currently shows VI India as its primary India network. That can work well where Vi is strong, but I would check the route rather than assuming every India eSIM gives you Jio or Airtel.
- Useful if Vi is strong in the places you are actually visiting.
- Easy setup before arrival and plans starting from about US$4.
- Do not buy it expecting Jio simply because older guides say so.

Why One National Ranking Is Not Enough in India
India is simply too big for one carrier to be strongest in every city, neighborhood and transport corridor. My Airtel experience was good, while the national data still puts Jio ahead overall; both things can be true at the same time.

Jio is India’s national leader and Opensignal says it leads Consistent Quality in 58 of 63 metro areas.
Airtel has regional strongholds
Opensignal specifically highlights cities such as Agra, Kota and Jhansi where Airtel performs particularly strongly.
Vi can be locally excellent
Vi remains much weaker nationally, but Mumbai is one example where targeted investment gives it a much stronger local position.

Airtel vs Jio vs Vi: What the Latest Independent Data Says
Opensignal measured India’s four main operators over 90 days from October 1 to December 29, 2025. For travelers comparing the big three private networks, Jio leads nationally—but the gaps are not equally important for every trip.

Jio: The Strongest Choice From the National Data
If I am choosing from the national numbers alone, Jio comes out ahead. Opensignal names it India’s Best Network in its February 2026 report.
It leads Coverage Experience, Download Speed Experience, 5G Coverage Experience, 5G Download Speed, 5G Availability, Reliability Experience and Consistent Quality. That is why I treat Jio as the national benchmark even though it was not the network I personally used.
My firsthand experience is with Airtel, so I do not pretend otherwise. Jio’s position here comes from the independent data, not from me claiming to have tested it across India.
Airtel: The Network I Actually Used Around India
Airtel is the network I know best from real use. It was my main connection while I was based in Mumbai and traveling elsewhere in India.
And, frankly, it was uneventful—which is exactly what I want from a mobile network. Maps loaded, rides worked, messages went through and I rarely had to think about the connection.
Jio still wins the national numbers, but Airtel is the network I can personally vouch for from extended use. Nomad’s current India eSIM also uses Airtel, so if you want to arrive connected without arranging a local SIM after landing, Nomad is the eSIM option I would check first.

Vi: Still Weaker Nationally, but Much More Interesting on 5G
Vi is the carrier where older comparisons can become misleading fastest. Its national footprint is still much smaller than Jio’s or Airtel’s, but its 5G rollout is now good enough to change the conversation.
In Opensignal’s latest report, Vi wins 5G Video Experience, 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience. So I would not write it off; I would simply want to know that Vi is strong in the places I am actually visiting.
That matters if you are looking at Airalo, because its current India product shows VI India as the primary network. I would choose it only if Vi makes sense for the places I am actually visiting.

Which Mobile Network Has the Best Coverage in India?
Nationally, the answer is Jio. Opensignal gives it a Coverage Experience score of 9.1/10, compared with 7.5 for Airtel and 4.1 for Vi.
That national gap does not mean Airtel is somehow unreliable for normal travel. It was my own network throughout an extended stay and worked well on the routes I used.

Which Network Has the Best 5G in India?
For nationwide 5G reach, Jio is still the clear leader. It scores 5.5/10 for 5G Coverage Experience and 69.2% for 5G Availability, compared with Airtel at 3.2/10 and 67.4%.
The interesting part is Vi. Its 5G footprint is much smaller, but where 5G is active, the experience itself can be excellent: Vi wins Opensignal’s latest 5G video, gaming and voice-app awards.
I do not choose a travel network because of the 5G icon alone. A stable 4G connection that keeps Google Maps, WhatsApp, Uber/Ola and train information working is more useful to me than a spectacular speed test that vanishes as soon as I move.
Nomad Uses Airtel; Airalo Uses Vi — and That Matters
Before buying an India eSIM, I check which local carrier it actually uses. That tells me far more about likely coverage than the eSIM brand name on its own.

Which Network Would I Choose in India?
If I were choosing only from the current national data, I would start with Jio. It leads the broadest set of metrics and has the strongest nationwide case.
Airtel is the network I know from real travel, and I would happily use it again. It did what I needed without becoming part of the trip—which is a pretty good endorsement.
Vi is more dependent on where you are going. Its newer 5G performance can be excellent, but I would check the route before relying on it as my only network.
My simple version: Jio wins the national data, Airtel is the one I personally trust from extended use, and Vi is the more location-specific choice.
