Can an India eSIM receive OTPs? Start with the number

During my time in India, calls, maps and messaging were straightforward once Airtel was working. OTPs are more particular: the code goes to the number registered with the service, and the service may run its own identity checks. A local SIM does not automatically fix an account registered to a foreign number—or a bank application that requires Indian residency.

A genuine Indian number handles ordinary SMS, not every verification requirement. That is why the app requesting the code matters more than an eSIM brand name.

How to get a real Indian mobile number as a foreign visitor

The reliable starting point is an authorized Airtel or Jio outlet, not a website selling an instant “Indian-number eSIM” to overseas visitors. Airport counters can be convenient, but foreign-passport registration may need help from a larger shop. Allow room in your arrival plans for the paperwork and activation.

India’s Telecommunications (User Identification) Rules, issued in August 2026, formalized identification requirements, including biometric-based checks and a document-verification route for customers without Aadhaar e-KYC. A passport upload from abroad is not a substitute for completing the carrier’s approved registration process.

An earlier Department of Telecommunications concession is useful for visitors: a July 2024 order allows an email OTP instead of the alternate Indian mobile number sometimes requested to sign a D-KYC form for foreign nationals. It does not remove the identity check. Staff familiarity varies, so have the relevant documents and ask for the foreign-national process.

1. Check your phone before flying. Confirm it is unlocked and whether it accepts a physical SIM, eSIM or both. Owners of eSIM-only phones need to ask the operator about issuing a new local eSIM directly; instructions for converting an existing number are not enough.
2. Bring the original documents. Take your passport, visa or relevant entry authorization, hotel address and booking confirmation. Keep an email account accessible for verification; the precise requirements can depend on the visitor’s status and the branch.
3. Choose an official operator outlet. Ask for a new prepaid Indian number registered in your own name with incoming SMS and local calls. That wording is clearer than asking a shop simply for “an eSIM.”
4. Complete foreign-national verification. Ask about the document-based KYC route. If the alternate Indian-number OTP causes trouble, mention the permitted email-OTP option for qualifying foreign visitors.
5. Test the number at the counter. Confirm the new +91 number and make sure an ordinary text arrives. Test a call if your plan includes voice. An SMS test does not override a bank or app’s own eligibility rules.
6. Convert later if there is a reason. A working physical SIM already handles SMS. Transfer to eSIM only when the extra convenience outweighs the temporary interruption.

Airtel, Jio or Vi: which operator makes sense for a visitor?

Airtel was my regular network during three months in India, including trips well beyond Mumbai. That first-hand experience is why it leads my shortlist. But network reliability on the road and approval of a new SIM under foreign-passport rules are separate issues; the latter depends on the registration process at the outlet.

Vi: a backup, not the default

Vi remains an option where its service and local registration support suit your plans, but Airtel and Jio are the clearer places to begin. Choose the operator whose authorized shop can register you correctly and confirm SMS reception. A theoretical network ranking is little help if the line cannot be activated.

Airtel and Jio eSIM conversion: the 24-hour SMS catch

Converting a new physical SIM into eSIM looks like an easy finishing touch, especially on phones with one SIM slot. For anyone relying on Indian verification messages, however, the timing matters. Both operators apply security steps that can interrupt SMS.

Airtel conversion

Airtel’s published upgrade route uses its app, the phone’s EID, an OTP sent to the existing Airtel number and a confirmation call before profile installation. Airtel says incoming and outgoing SMS—including OTPs—are blocked for 24 hours after completion. Keep the phone on a reliable connection throughout activation and follow the operator’s installation deadline.

Jio conversion

Jio’s conversion process also starts with an existing activated number: confirm the registered email, supply the EID and verify the OTP. Its guidance mentions a two-hour cooling period before a confirmation call. Jio’s transfer instructions warn of an SMS interruption that can last up to 24 hours. Do not start the transfer with a critical code due shortly afterward.

One distinction causes endless confusion online: converting an existing Indian number is not the same as getting a new Indian number. A tutorial that begins with “enter the OTP on your Jio number” does not solve the problem of registering a brand-new SIM with a foreign passport.

The simpler option: travel data plus your existing number

For most holidays, the easiest setup is a travel eSIM for internet access while your original number stays available for important texts. A data plan cannot create an Indian +91 number, but many visitors never need one in the first place.

Dual-SIM phones often allow one line for mobile data and another for calls or SMS. Before departure, check which lines can be active together and set the defaults carefully. Keeping your usual phone number registered for WhatsApp does not require using that line for mobile data.

For longer stays, a verified Indian SIM can take over both data and local calls. A second travel eSIM is useful only when it fills a real gap—for example, internet access while the local number is being activated.

Indian apps, UPI and train tickets: what a +91 number can unlock

SMS access is only one part of account verification. An app may send a code to your number and still require bank details, residency or other identity checks. These are the cases worth separating before spending time registering a local line.

UPI and banking

Bank-linked UPI normally requires an eligible account and separate bank verification. An Indian phone number does not open an account for a short-term visitor. Eligible NRIs may have options involving approved international numbers, but that is a different situation from arriving without an Indian banking relationship.

India has also piloted UPI One World wallets for certain international visitors without Indian bank accounts or mobile numbers. NPCI described an expansion for eligible delegates at a February 2026 event, but access is not universal at every destination or time. Check the current availability and onboarding conditions before counting on it.

IRCTC train booking

IRCTC has an international-user registration route for foreign phone numbers, with its own verification requirements and possible fees. An Indian SIM is not automatically necessary to book train tickets. Check the international sign-up process before joining a queue at a mobile shop just for rail travel.

Ride-hailing, deliveries and local services

Maps, messaging and many booking apps need only data. Some Indian services work with foreign numbers, others prefer domestic numbers or use additional checks. A +91 line can help with calls to drivers, hotels and businesses, but it is not a universal pass into every app.

Pin down the obstacle before buying a new SIM: does the service require an Indian SMS code, a verified identity, an Indian bank account or some combination? Each has a different solution.

Indian OTP not arriving? Check these points first

Start by separating a phone problem from an app problem. If an ordinary text from another phone never arrives, investigate SIM activation, network connection, account status and any recent eSIM conversion. If normal texts arrive but one specific OTP fails, the service may be rejecting the registration or delaying another code.

Avoid deleting an eSIM profile as a first troubleshooting step. Reissuing a carrier profile can require another round of verification at a store—an unnecessary detour during a trip.
