Skala concentrates Patmos’ ferry port, buses, taxis, shops and widest selection of restaurants in one walkable area. What I appreciated here was the freedom to arrive, leave my luggage and start moving around the island without first arranging a car.

Hotels range from simple rooms near the quay to quieter apartments behind the waterfront. Check the exact map pin because harbour-facing rooms may hear ferry activity, while properties farther back can involve an uphill walk.

Skala cannot match Chora for history or Grikos for seclusion, but it is the easiest place to stay in Patmos when convenience matters most.

Grikos feels deliberately removed from the movement of Skala. The bay curves beneath low hills, with Kalikatsou Rock closing the view at one end and hotels, villas and tavernas spaced quietly along the waterfront. Its position often protects the water from stronger conditions, although calm swimming is never guaranteed on a windy island.

When I visited, what stood out was how quickly the pace changed. Grikos felt polished without becoming showy, and the absence of a busy commercial centre allowed the bay itself to dominate. This is where to stay in Patmos if you want mornings beside the water, quiet evenings and accommodation with pools, terraces or direct beach access.

The compromise is limited choice beyond the hotel. There are only a handful of places to eat and shop, and reaching Chora or Skala is easier with a car, bus or taxi. Grikos suits couples and relaxed stays better than travellers who want variety outside their door.

Vagia, Geranos and other northern beaches are within easier reach from here, which also makes Kampos useful for a longer beach-focused stay. The drawback is distance from Chora and the ferry port. Buses operate seasonally, but a car provides much more freedom for dinners and exploring beyond the immediate area.

Chora left the strongest impression on me, but Skala makes daily logistics simpler, Grikos offers genuine waterfront calm, and Kampos gives families room to slow down beside the beach.
