Athens to Sifnos Ferry: Fast vs Conventional, Piraeus & Arrival Tips
Getting from Athens to Sifnos is simple because there is only one real mode of transport: the ferry. Sifnos has no airport, so the useful decisions are which Athens port to use, whether to take a fast or conventional ferry, and how much time to leave between an Athens flight and your sailing.
For most travelers I would keep it simple and leave from Piraeus. Fast ferries can reach Kamares in about 2 hours 30 minutes, while conventional ferries generally take around 4–5 hours. I choose the fast boat when time on the island matters more; I prefer a larger conventional ferry when I have a relaxed schedule or expect rougher conditions.
Last checked: October 2026. Ferry times vary by date and season, so use the durations here as planning benchmarks and check the live sailing before booking.
What is the best way to get from Athens to Sifnos?
Take a ferry from Piraeus to Kamares. For a short Sifnos trip, I would pay more for the fast ferry. For a longer trip where half a day does not matter, the conventional ferry is a perfectly good choice.
Fastest: around 2½ hours
Conventional ferry: roughly 4–5 hours
Main Athens port: Piraeus
Arrival port: Kamares, Sifnos
Seasonal alternative: Lavrio on selected summer schedules
Best when every hour on Sifnos matters and you want to arrive before lunch or early afternoon.
More room to walk around, open deck space on many vessels and a less compressed journey.
Vessel and sea conditions matter, but I generally prefer a larger conventional ship when the forecast is rough.
Fast ferry or conventional ferry to Sifnos?
| Fast ferry | Conventional ferry | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical journey | About 2½–3 hours | About 4–5 hours |
| Best for | Short trips, maximizing island time | Slower travel, deck space, relaxed schedules |
| Seating | More airline-style and structured | More freedom to move around |
| Outside decks | Limited or unavailable on some vessels | Usually a stronger part of the experience |
| Rough weather | Smaller high-speed vessels can feel movement more | Larger vessels often feel steadier |
| Vehicle transport | Available on some vessels | Normally available |
The cheapest ticket is not always the best value. If a faster ferry gives you an extra three hours on a three-day trip, I think the higher fare is easy to justify. On a week-long island stay, I care much less about saving two hours.

Schedules, vessels and prices change through the season. Compare the live options for your travel date rather than assuming the fastest or cheapest ferry runs every day.

Ferries leave mainland Attica and cross the western Cyclades toward Kamares on Sifnos. Serifos is commonly the island you see immediately before Sifnos on routes that make intermediate stops.
Piraeus to Sifnos
Piraeus is the main Athens port for Sifnos and the option I would choose unless a specific Lavrio sailing fits your trip unusually well.
The route operates throughout the year, with more choices in the warmer months. In summer, you can often choose between high-speed and conventional vessels rather than building the entire trip around one departure.
Piraeus is enormous, but boarding is not complicated once you know the correct gate. Check the gate on your ticket or operator message rather than relying on a gate number saved from an older trip. Arriving early matters more than memorizing the layout.

With a normal passenger ticket, I aim to be in the correct port area about 45–60 minutes before departure. With a vehicle, I leave more time because loading begins earlier and summer traffic inside Piraeus can slow everything down.
How to get from Athens Airport to Piraeus
You no longer need to change metro lines in central Athens. Metro Line 3 runs directly from Athens International Airport to Piraeus, making it the public transport option I use as the benchmark.
Around 60 minutes. Predictable and convenient when you are comfortable handling your luggage on the train.
Around 90 minutes in normal planning estimates. Useful overnight and when you prefer staying above ground with luggage.
The easiest option after a long flight or with heavy luggage, but traffic makes the journey less predictable than the metro.

Can you fly into Athens and take the Sifnos ferry the same day?
Yes, but this is one place where I would not optimize the schedule down to the last minute.
You need time for the aircraft to arrive, baggage collection, the airport-to-Piraeus transfer and finding the correct ferry gate. A delayed flight can erase what looked like a comfortable connection when you booked it.
For an international arrival, I personally prefer a generous multi-hour buffer. If the only suitable ferry leaves shortly after your flight lands, I would rather spend the first night in Athens or Piraeus than begin an island trip by watching the ferry leave without me.
An airline delay normally does not make the ferry company responsible for your missed sailing. Treat the flight and ferry as two independent journeys when deciding how much buffer feels acceptable.
Lavrio to Sifnos: when it makes sense
Lavrio appears on the Sifnos schedule seasonally rather than replacing Piraeus as the main route.
In summer, Lavrio can be useful when a sailing fits your dates particularly well or when you are already staying in southeastern Attica.
I would not choose Lavrio simply because it looks geographically closer to Athens Airport. Public transport is less direct than the airport-to-Piraeus connection, so for most visitors staying in Athens, Piraeus remains simpler.
When should you book the Athens to Sifnos ferry?
Sifnos is especially popular with Greek travelers, and summer weekends can become busy quickly. I would book earlier for:
- July and August
- Friday departures from Athens
- Sunday returns
- high-speed ferries with fewer seats
- travel with a car
- fixed hotel bookings where changing the ferry day would be expensive
In May, June, September and outside major holiday periods, there is usually more flexibility, but the timetable can also be thinner.
I do not choose a sailing from the headline duration alone. I compare departure time, arrival time, vessel type and total price. A 2½-hour ferry leaving much later in the day can be less useful than a slower ship that gets you to Sifnos earlier.
Arriving in Kamares
All regular passenger ferries arrive in Kamares, the main port on the west coast of Sifnos.
It is one of the easier Cyclades ports to arrive at. The village, sandy beach, restaurants, car rentals and accommodation are immediately around the harbor rather than separated from the ferry terminal by a large transport zone.
Buses connect Kamares with Apollonia, Artemonas and the main beach villages. Because schedules change through the season, I check the current timetable at Sifnos Bus rather than relying on an old screenshot or timetable.
Once you arrive, my Sifnos travel guide is the main guide for planning the island itself, including villages, beaches, hiking, food and a three-day itinerary.
If you still need to choose a base, my where to stay in Sifnos guide compares Kamares, Apollonia, Artemonas, Platis Gialos, Faros and the quieter areas.
Getting to Sifnos from Serifos, Milos and Kythnos
Sifnos sits in the middle of a very useful Western Cyclades ferry chain.
Serifos is the most natural neighboring stop to the north. Milos is the obvious continuation to the southwest, while Kythnos can work well when you are moving gradually between Athens and the islands.
The important thing is not to assume every ferry follows the same sequence. Routes and intermediate stops change through the season, so I build the trip around the actual sailings available for my dates.

Using Sifnos in a Western Cyclades island-hopping trip
Sifnos works especially well between Serifos and Milos because the ferry legs stay manageable and the islands feel genuinely different from each other.
I like the sequence Serifos → Sifnos → Milos: rugged Chora and beaches first, then Sifnos’ villages, food and trails, followed by the volcanic landscapes of Milos.

Athens to Sifnos ferry FAQ
How long is the ferry from Athens to Sifnos?
The fastest Piraeus to Sifnos ferries take around 2½ hours. Conventional ferries generally take roughly 4–5 hours depending on the vessel and intermediate stops.
Does Sifnos have an airport?
No. Sifnos has no airport, so visitors arrive by ferry at Kamares.
Which Athens port goes to Sifnos?
Piraeus is the main port for Sifnos. Lavrio can have seasonal summer service, but I consider it an alternative rather than the default Athens route.
Is the fast ferry to Sifnos worth it?
I think so for a short trip. Saving roughly two hours can make a meaningful difference over three or four days. On a longer stay, I am much happier taking the slower conventional ferry.
Which ferry is better if I get seasick?
I generally prefer a larger conventional vessel in rough conditions because it often feels steadier than a smaller high-speed ferry. Sea conditions and the exact ship still matter.
Can I go directly from Athens Airport to Piraeus?
Yes. Metro Line 3 connects Athens Airport directly with Piraeus in about one hour. The X96 airport bus also runs directly to Piraeus and is useful when the metro is not convenient.
Can I take a ferry to Sifnos on the same day I land in Athens?
Yes, but leave a generous buffer. The flight and ferry are normally separate tickets, so a delayed flight can leave you responsible for replacing a missed ferry ticket.
Where does the ferry arrive in Sifnos?
Ferries arrive at Kamares on the west coast. The port village has accommodation, restaurants, a beach, taxis, buses and car rentals close to the dock.
How early should I arrive at Piraeus?
I aim for roughly 45–60 minutes before departure as a foot passenger and more when traveling with a vehicle. Check your ticket for the operator’s own boarding instructions.
Can I take a car on the Athens to Sifnos ferry?
Yes on conventional ferries and on some high-speed vessels with vehicle garages. Vehicle capacity is more limited than passenger seating, so I would book early in summer.
What islands combine well with Sifnos?
Serifos and Milos are the most natural pairings. Sifnos sits between them in the Western Cyclades network, making short multi-island trips easy to organize.
Which Athens to Sifnos ferry would I book?
For a three- or four-day Sifnos trip, I would normally take the fastest sensible Piraeus sailing. The time saved is more valuable to me than spending another two hours on the ferry.
For a longer trip, I am perfectly happy on a conventional ship. There is more space, the crossing feels less compressed, and arriving in Kamares after watching the Cyclades pass from an open deck is a good way to begin the island.
The important part is not automatically booking the boat with the shortest crossing time. Compare when it leaves, when it arrives, what kind of vessel it is and how comfortably it fits your Athens transfer.
Once the ferry is booked, continue with my Sifnos travel guide. That is the main Sifnos planning page for what to do, villages, beaches, hiking, food and itinerary ideas.
