One Base or Two? Where to Stay in São Miguel for 3, 5 or 7 Days
For most trips of five nights or fewer, I would use one base. With a week or more, adding Furnas or Nordeste can reduce driving and give you a very different evening atmosphere.

Where to Stay in São Miguel Without a Car
If you are visiting São Miguel without renting a car, stay in Ponta Delgada. Airport transfers, organized tours, whale-watching trips, restaurants, supermarkets and taxis are all easiest here.
Furnas can work for one or two nights if you specifically want the geothermal valley, but I would not use it as your only base without a car.
Bottom line: Ponta Delgada is by far the easiest place to stay in São Miguel without a car.

Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is the easiest place to settle into São Miguel. Restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, the marina and many tours are walkable, while the airport is only minutes away.
Its main weakness is parking in and around the centre. With a rental car, I would check parking before booking. The city is also less scenic than São Miguel’s rural bases, but for convenience and flexibility it remains difficult to beat.

What I enjoy most about São Miguel is how quickly its mood changes. A misty crater in the morning can become bright Atlantic coastline an hour later, so where you stay changes more than the length of your drive.
On another trip, I would happily return to places I already know rather than chase a long list of new sights. São Miguel rewards slower days surprisingly well.
